Libčany combines a long history with ponds, a nature trail and local traditions. The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and two former fortresses give its cultural heritage a distinct character, while Kočár, Brigádník and the pond in Tovární Park each add a different landscape feature. During your stay, you can decide whether to focus on architectural history or the local history of ponds and customs.

Church and fortress history

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is an important historical monument in Libčany. It was founded in the Romanesque style at the beginning of the 13th century and remodelled around the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. Its architectural history thus combines an early foundation with a much later period of alterations. The church is a tangible reference point for understanding the history of the locality.

The history of the locality also includes two fortresses in different locations. Turyně Fortress once stood on an island in a pond in the centre of the village and served as the seat of the Lords of Libčany. A second fortress was built on the site where Libčany Castle later stood; the primary school is now located there. The fortress fell into ruin around the middle of the 16th century. A single-storey Renaissance castle was later built on its site.

The area around Libčany was already inhabited in prehistoric times, as evidenced by skeletal graves of the Únětice culture. This early period long predates the Romanesque foundation of the church and the later fortresses. The history of the locality therefore spans both prehistoric settlement and later architectural and feudal history.

Ponds and nature trail

The “Cesta do minulosti Libčan a Hvozdnic” (“Journey into the Past of Libčany and Hvozdnice”) nature trail begins at Kočár pond. The pond lies close to the village centre and covers about 3,300 m². The trail’s name focuses on the past of Libčany and Hvozdnice; Kočár provides a clearly marked starting point.

At 4,000 m², Brigádník is the largest of the ponds in Libčany. Its condition has changed over time. The size figures give a sense of scale when comparing it with Kočár: Kočár covers about 3,300 m², while Brigádník is larger. The pond in Tovární Park is primarily used for recreation; a wooden footbridge crosses the water.

Please note that access to Turyň pond is restricted: it is on private property and is not open to the public.

Seasonal activities and local traditions

When there is sufficient frost and the ice is safe, Kočár pond is used by skaters of all ages and skill levels. While skating depends on these winter conditions, regular fish harvests at Kočár include the sale of fish and fish specialities.

Libušina studánka is a spring in the forest between Libčany and Hřibsko. Local tradition associates it with water said to have healing properties. Thus, alongside architectural and settlement history, the landscape and local traditions are also part of Libčany’s character.
