There are several ways to explore Zvánovice during a stay: a walk to the nearby Zvánovický potok, a longer cycling route and several historical landmarks. This offers different scales to consider when planning: a short approach to the water, a circular route with a wider regional context, and the history of a chapel, a decorative stone cross and a memorial.
Walking Trail and Cycling Route
Nearby, a green-marked walking trail leads from the road between Zvánovice and Černé Voděrady to the Zvánovický potok, about 100 to 150 metres away. Check the trail markings and conditions on site. The stream rises near Habr, flows towards Propast and forms much of the boundary between the cadastral areas of Černé Voděrady and Zvánovice.
The marked cycling route 0023, “Krajem Josefa Lady,” runs through the cadastral area of Zvánovice. It is part of the interregional Greenway main route from Prague to Vienna and is also a 76.3-kilometre circular route. This length refers to the entire circuit; the local connection is its route through the cadastral area.
Chapel, Decorative Stone Cross and Memorial
The Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk stands on the site of a wooden bell tower that had stood there since ancient times; the chapel was consecrated on 4 May 1837. The chapel and its designated plot are protected as monuments. Two points in time therefore come together in the same place: the earlier site of the wooden bell tower and the chapel’s specific consecration year.
The stone decorative cross stands on Zvánovice’s lower village square; its full restoration was completed in 2022. The memorial to the local residents who fell in the First World War was erected on the village square near the school in 1922. Together with the consecration year of 1837, these landmarks show that each local date is tied to a specific building, memorial or event. The chapel and memorial represent different ways of engaging with the village’s history: the chapel is linked to the former bell tower site, while the memorial commemorates the residents who fell in the First World War.
Customs and Regional Craft Traditions
Before Christmas Eve, people regularly gather near the chapel and lime trees to listen to Christmas carols and warm up with hot drinks. This custom adds a seasonal, communal dimension to the architectural and historical landmarks. The run-up to Christmas is therefore the key date to bear in mind when planning a visit.
Charcoal has long been produced in this heavily forested region. This tradition broadens the focus from individual village landmarks to a regional craft. It represents a different layer of history from the specific buildings and memorials in Zvánovice.
