Káraný’s location at the confluence of the Elbe and Jizera makes it easy to place geographically. For planning, cycling routes and an educational trail offer specific route options, while the riverside landscape, forest and history of the waterworks provide further highlights. You can tailor your stay to your interests: cycling routes, riverside scenery or cultural history.

Cycling routes and trails in Káraný

Cycling route 0041 Káraný–Kochánky passes through Káraný and continues via Sojovice and Předměřice to Kochánky; the Greenway Jizera passes through Káraný on its way back to the Elbe at Lázně Toušeň. Check the conditions and restrictions on cycling route 0041 before setting off; conditions on the Greenway may also change.

The pedestrian and cycle bridge to Toušeň carries both pedestrian and cycle traffic and a medium-pressure gas pipeline across the Elbe. It is located about 500 metres upstream from the confluence of the Jizera and the Elbe. Check the current crossing conditions before using it.

Káraný is a gateway to the Císařské lesy forests. In addition, unpaved forest paths lead from Káraný to Zelená bouda. Conditions may change seasonally, so check the current state of the paths before using them.

The “Naučná stezka Údolím Labe” educational trail is 21 kilometres long and has 24 information-board stops. It passes Grado and a footbridge over the Elbe, connecting Lysá nad Labem, Káraný and Čelákovice. The length indicates the route distance, while the information-board stops provide additional information along the trail.

Riverside scenery and fishing

Grado is a former oxbow of the Elbe. Lipovka is a remnant of the original floodplain forest along the Elbe. These are two distinct landscape features: a former river channel and a surviving floodplain forest. Václavka is a state nature reserve.

Near Káraný, the Jizera 1 fishing area extends from its confluence with the Elbe at Toušeň to the weir at the Kačov power station. Fishing from a boat is permitted. Check the applicable permits and regulations before fishing.

Chapels and the history of the waterworks

The Chapel of St John of Nepomuk was built in 1907 in the centre of the original village, on Václavská Street. It is a specific landmark in the local history.

The Káraný waterworks complex officially began operating on 1 January 1914. After it opened, the waterworks supplied Prague with 880 litres of drinking water per second from the region. This figure describes historical output, not the current operating volume.

There is also an open-air forest chapel, “U svatého Václava,” near Káraný. It dates from around 1696 and was part of a group of three natural hermitages located close together. Together with the Chapel of St John of Nepomuk, it offers another glimpse into the history of religious buildings in the area.
