Předboj’s local and natural history can be traced through several clearly distinct themes. Husův pomník, Kaplička, Křížek and Zvonička represent specific monuments; archaeological finds point to even earlier settlement. There are also traces of the Cretaceous period, as well as Velký předbojský rybník and Sportovní areál Západní Stráň, both associated with recreation. So no single theme has to determine your travel plans: you can look at Předboj through the lens of history, geology or recreation and choose the focus that suits your stay.
Monuments with a history of their own
Husův pomník was erected in 1915 to mark the 500th anniversary of Jan Hus’s execution. Its history continued with a new relief: the original relief was stolen in 2015, and a replacement featuring a portrait of Jan Hus was added in 2021. The sequence makes both the reason for the memorial and a later change visible at the same monument.
Kaplička is a niche chapel on the outskirts of Předboj, in the direction of Prague, and dates from around 1800. Another local landmark is Křížek, erected in 1864 right next to Zvonička. Both were fully restored in 2021 as part of the park’s redesign; a new bell was installed at Zvonička. This makes it possible to distinguish different forms of commemoration and religious architecture without treating them as a single complex.
Tvrz: a historical landmark, not an intact ruin
Tvrz in Předboj probably dates from the 14th century and was first mentioned in writing in 1383. The probable date of origin and the first written mention are two different chronological indications: neither establishes a definite year of construction, and they do not refer to the same event. Since 1958, Tvrz has been registered as a cultural monument under number 46191/2-4143.
If you are interested in the site, it is also worth knowing what remains of the complex: the last remains of Tvrz were destroyed in 1996 during the reconstruction of the buildings of the former manor farm. Tvrz is therefore part of Předboj’s history, but it is not an intact ruin to expect to see on site. Its significance is also evident in the archaeological context. Předboj is classified as an important archaeological site in category ÚAN I. Finds in the western part of the village, along a stream flowing into the village, and near the former Tvrz provide evidence of settlement as early as the hillfort period.
The Cretaceous period and recreation
The natural history of the area reaches far back, too. A fossil found within the cadastral area of Předboj is estimated to be 88 million years old. The fossil-rich Korycany beds formed from deposits of a former shallow sea during the Cretaceous period. The fossil and the rock layers offer two different perspectives: one is a single find of estimated age; the other tells the story of deposits from an ancient seascape.
Předboj offers two places for recreation, each described in a different way: Velký předbojský rybník is a popular recreational spot. Sportovní areál Západní Stráň is a modern public space that brings together sport, recreation and tranquillity. The pond and the sports complex therefore offer different experiences, even though recreation is a feature of both.
