Karlova Ves lies in the forested central part of the Křivoklátsko Protected Landscape Area. The history of the village also traces a path from a settlement of woodcutters and charcoal burners to a major centre of charcoal production. If you would like to include nature and cultural history in your travel plans, you will find a range of themes here: the protected landscape and the history of settlement.

Forests and Protected Areas

Most of the cadastral area of Karlova Ves lies in the central part and Zone I of the Křivoklátsko Protected Landscape Area. The forests in the protected landscape area where Karlova Ves is located consist mainly of deciduous and mixed stands. The Týřov National Nature Reserve includes extensive areas of well-preserved forest. The rocky gorge of Týřovické skály is also part of the reserve.

Týřov Castle Ruins and Access in the Reserve

Týřov Castle was built in the 13th century and fell into ruin in the 16th century. The Týřov National Nature Reserve is open to the public only via a marked hiking trail from Skryje to the castle ruins and back. Check the current information about the protected area before setting out. On the way to the ruins, follow the Úpořský Stream, also known as Oupořský, cross it, and then climb uphill. Terrain conditions may vary seasonally. Týřov offers a wonderful view of the Berounka River and the surrounding area.

Another Hiking Trail Nearby

The 10 km, moderately difficult “Okolí Skryj” hiking trail is designated nearby. It passes through the Jezírka Nature Reserve, known for its rocky gorge, and leads to the Joachim Barrande Memorial. A museum with palaeontological finds is located there. Two specific details are provided for planning this hike: its length of 10 km and its moderate difficulty rating. The route therefore offers a different perspective on the area from the trail to the Týřov Castle ruins, which is described as crossing a stream and then climbing uphill.

From Charcoal Burning to Cultural History

Karlova Ves was founded in 1828 as a settlement of woodcutters and charcoal burners. The village later developed into a major centre of charcoal production in the Křivoklátsko region. This history gives the region’s abundant forests a human and economic dimension, too: wood and charcoal are part of the village’s origins.

The poet Antonín Macek came to Karlova Ves for summer stays from 1919 to 1923. Another historic site in the cadastral area is the Emilovna hunting lodge, built in the 19th century by Prince Emil of Fürstenberg. A replica of three stone cannonballs stands at the crossroads in front of the hunting lodge. The area’s history thus ranges from the founding of the settlement and charcoal production to later cultural connections.
