Zbečno combines the rural folk architecture of the Hamousův statek with a church whose history of construction spans from the Middle Ages to the Baroque period. The town lies in the Berounka Valley and offers different points of interest for a stay: historic buildings, hiking trails featuring nature and landscape themes, and a hike with clearly specified railway station endpoints. You can plan your day according to whether you would rather focus on architectural history, woodland themes or a clearly described route.
Folk Architecture and Architectural History
The Hamousův statek is one of the oldest publicly accessible folk architecture monuments in Central Bohemia. Its exhibition presents traditional crafts and rural life on a farmstead. Homemade bread is baked in the farmstead’s old oven every Sunday. This makes the site a place where both rural everyday culture and a recurring baking tradition take centre stage.
The Roman Catholic Church of St. Martin was built in the mid-14th century. After being damaged, it was given Baroque façades and interiors during an extensive reconstruction in 1715. Its architectural history thus spans a medieval building and a later Baroque transformation. The parish remains active; the Roman Catholic Church uses the building for regular services.
Another historic landmark is the Masaryk Bridge over the Berounka. Dating from 1924–1925, it adds a 20th-century structure to the church’s older architectural history.
Hiking Trails and Landscape
Zbečno lies in the Křivoklátská vrchovina uplands and is part of the Křivoklátsko Protected Landscape Area. The Brdatka Nature Trail is a seven-kilometre hiking trail of moderate difficulty. Its 17 information panels cover the protected landscape area, fauna, flora and forests. The trail also includes the Gloriet observation pavilion; one of the stops offers views of the Berounka Valley and the panorama of the wooded Křivoklátsko hills.
Another option is the Procházka přemyslovským hvozdem: this moderately difficult hike is 7.5 kilometres long and runs from Křivoklát railway station to Zbečno railway station. Both hikes are rated as moderately difficult and are similar in length. However, their stated highlights differ: Brdatka focuses on information panels and viewpoints, while the other route has clearly named endpoints at its two railway stations.
The Berounka Water Trail also offers a way to explore nature and landscape. Its 14 stops focus on the Berounka River, local nature, history and notable figures. This gives the trail a different thematic focus from Brdatka’s woodland and protected landscape topics.
Getting There and Planning
Zbečno is on the Beroun–Rakovník railway line and has train connections. A direct bus connects the town with the city of Kladno. Check current timetables before travelling so that you can plan your journey and, if needed, your return to suit your plans.
When looking for a holiday apartment, the specific focus of your stay can help guide your choice: the historic buildings give your visit a cultural focus, while the two moderately difficult hikes offer different themes and route profiles. If you plan to arrive by train, Zbečno railway station is also listed as the endpoint of the Procházka přemyslovským hvozdem. This makes it possible to plan your choice between visiting the town and hiking based on the stated destinations and connections.
