Stechovice offers a clear mix of natural history, architecture and technology: the Svatojánské proudy nature trail focuses on natural history; the parish Church of St. John of Nepomuk brings architectural history into view, and the hydroelectric power station adds a dimension of engineering history. Your stay does not have to combine these themes into a single itinerary. First decide whether the walk, the church or a pre-booked power station tour should shape your day.

Nature Trail and Getting There

The Povltavská stezka – Naučná stezka Svatojánské proudy trail begins in Štěchovice and ends in Nové Třebenice. At seven kilometres long, with twelve stops, it offers two specific details to help you plan. Its subject matter includes botany, zoology and ecology. Those interested in plants, wildlife and ecological relationships will find a clear focus on nature here. As the start and end points are in different places, take Nové Třebenice into account as well as Štěchovice when planning the rest of your day.

The route runs partly along a steep slope and is for pedestrians only. Take both details into account when planning your day, and check seasonal conditions before setting out.

The trail information lists travel to Štěchovice by car via road II/102 and by bus; it also mentions a boat that operates seasonally during the holidays. If you plan to use this option, check the timetable for your travel dates. It is also a good idea to check the latest information on other connections before departure.

Church and Tower Museum

The parish Church of St. John of Nepomuk stands on a hill. Its tiered roof resembles the surrounding hills on the horizon, giving the architecture a tangible connection to the ridgeline. The church was newly built and consecrated on 23 October 1915. Its design brings together motifs from Art Nouveau, classical antiquity, Byzantine, Romanesque and Renaissance architecture. The focus, then, is not on a single style, but on a combination of different architectural traditions.

The church’s Tower Museum opened to the public in August 2020. The exhibition is dedicated to life in the parish. Check the current visiting arrangements before your visit.

Hydroelectric Power and Dam

The visitor centre at the Štěchovice hydroelectric power station offers free guided tours by prior arrangement. The tours include the machine hall at Štěchovice I and the outdoor switchyard with its transformers. When booking, confirm the planned programme and check the current reservation requirements.

The Štěchovice Dam was built between 1937 and 1945 and is faced with granite. Alongside the engineering history of the hydroelectric power station, this adds a tangible history of construction and materials.
