Okrouhlo lies on the edge of the Střed Čech Nature Park; the Zahořanský Stream and a wooded valley give the village a strong connection to its landscape. A document, a wooden farmstead and traces of past uses offer further ways to explore local history. If you are looking for a holiday rental in Okrouhlo, you can decide whether you would like to focus your stay mainly on the landscape, history or outdoor activities.
Valley, Stream and Varta
The natural environment of the Zahořanský Stream, which is of significant value, includes many tributaries flowing through the Okrouhlo area. Numerous protected animal species live in the wooded Zahořanské Valley. Above the village rises Varta, at 376 metres high. Its slopes were once cultivated in terraces; originally, the summit was bare and covered with sparse grass and heather. After 1963, it was planted with black pines and mixed woodland.
These features bring together different aspects of the landscape: a stream and wooded valley with protected wildlife, and a hill whose use and planting have changed over time. Those interested in cultural landscapes can connect the Varta’s earlier cultivation and later planting with the natural description of the valley.
Local History and Architectural Traces
Okrouhlo was first mentioned in 1228 in a document from the Prague convent of St. George. The document recorded that the village had long belonged to the Monastery of St. John the Baptist on Ostrov near Davle. The first written mention and the already long-standing affiliation noted in it mark different points in time: 1228 is the date of the mention, not the beginning of the relationship described.
Another piece of local history is house No. 32, which preserves part of a former larger wooden farmstead. The document and the farmstead offer two different ways to explore the past: the village’s early written record and an architectural trace. Okrouhlo can therefore be viewed both through its historical affiliation and its surviving architecture.
Traces of Gold and Valley Settlements
There are traces of medieval gold mining around the Zahořanský Stream and in the adjoining side valleys. From 1919, tramping cabins were built in the Zahořanské Valley, later developing into named settlements, including Havaj, Orlík and Sedm jezů. This offers a different historical perspective from the earlier cultivation of Varta: here, the focus is on mining traces and the later development of settlements.
Hiking, Cycling and Getting There
According to a hiking description published on 24 May 2025, a 5.7-kilometre route follows the yellow hiking trail through Okrouhlo and meets cycle route 19A at map point 4. There are also cycle routes in the Zahořanský Valley. These offer different options for planning a trip: a specific hike with a stated distance and trail marking, or cycling routes in the valley. Check trail conditions before setting out.
