The church, castle, Baroque art and a former broadcasting station give Luštěnice a range of historical points of interest. There are also opportunities for recreational cycling and a few leisure activities. This allows you to tailor your stay to your own interests: you can focus on the town’s architecture and history, explore the surrounding area by bike or take part in a specific activity. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can use these interests as a starting point when planning your trip.
Church, castle and local history
The Church of St Martin was already a parish church in the 14th century. The present church building dates from 1739; since 3 May 1958, the church has been listed as a national cultural monument. These milestones link its medieval ecclesiastical role with its later construction and heritage status.
Another detail of cultural history is the Baroque statue of St John of Nepomuk. It depicts the saint standing on a large fish. This distinctive image adds a special note alongside the history of the church and castle.
The castle’s origins and its present form date to different periods. It was probably created at the beginning of the 18th century by rebuilding an older fortress. Between 1760 and 1774, the castle was remodelled into its present form. The first date refers to its probable origins, while the second marks a later alteration to the castle.
Numerous archaeological finds point to early settlement in the area where Luštěnice stands today. The oldest documents, dating from 1268, mention Pavel of Luštěnice as the founder of a monastery near Mělník. The historical record thus reaches from early settlement to a named individual from the 13th century.
A more recent chapter is the Luštěnice broadcasting station. Construction was completed and the station began operating in 1976; it ceased operating in 1991. As a broadcasting facility, it served the staff of the Central Group of Forces stationed in Milovice. Its former role represents a different period from the earlier history of the church and castle.
The district of Zelená also has its own geographical and historical significance: it is the northernmost extension of the former Milovice–Mladá military training area and lies in the vicinity of Luštěnice.
Cycling and leisure activities
The whole area around Luštěnice is suitable for recreational cycling because of its gentle terrain. Cycling can therefore provide a different focus alongside the town’s cultural and historical attractions.
There are playgrounds at the football pitch, in the swimming pool area and in the housing estate on Nová Street. In Zelená, next to the allotment gardens, there is a workout area with fitness equipment. As facilities like these can change, it is a good idea to check that they are currently available before visiting.
One distinctive activity is the Slot Racing Club Luštěnice, which has two model car racing tracks. If you are planning a visit, check beforehand whether the club is operating.
Getting there and choosing accommodation
Rail services in Luštěnice are provided by České dráhy. If you are travelling by train, it is best to check the operator’s current timetable, as schedules can change.
When choosing a holiday apartment, you can base your decision on your own priorities: would you mainly like to explore the town’s history, include recreational cycling or visit a particular leisure attraction? This comparison can help you tailor your stay to the actual reason for your trip, without turning every topic into a must-do.
