At Předliška, a spur of land rises 56 metres above the Jizera River; a transverse rampart encloses an area of about six hectares there. Its elevated position and ramparts give Hrdlořezy a distinctive archaeological significance.

Archaeology and early history

The Předliška archaeological site is a protected monument. Finds at Předliška provide evidence of settlement in the Stone Age, the Bronze Age, and the Middle and Late Hillfort periods. The sequence of finds thus spans several clearly identified periods. Předliška was also probably a cult site of the Únětice culture.

The fortified site near Hrdlořezy is considered one of the oldest fortified settlements in the Mladá Boleslav region. The local site is therefore also part of the region’s historical context.

Access to the archaeological site

A route description from 2017 starts at the northern edge of the village: the path climbs northwest and, by a rocky slope, branches right, or northeast, towards the Předliška farmstead. The description notes that there is no direct road to the archaeological site. Information published in 2017 describes it as freely accessible. Before visiting, check whether access is still possible and what the current path conditions are.

Village centre and history

The Chapel of St John of Nepomuk dominates Hrdlořezy’s historic village square, shaping the historic centre of the village. A different historical period is reflected in the life of Václav Tarantík: during the Second World War, he served with the 1st Czechoslovak Bomber Squadron in England. He was killed on 13 July 1944 during a patrol flight over the Atlantic.

Walking and cycling

A green-marked walking route passes through Hrdlořezy and continues to nearby Mladá Boleslav. For cyclists, local route No. 8157 runs from Mladá Boleslav-Debř through Hrdlořezy to Bukovno. These destinations provide a concrete guide for planning: Mladá Boleslav is named as the destination of the walking route, while the cycling route follows the sequence Debř–Hrdlořezy–Bukovno.

Before cycling route 8157, check the current signage and surface conditions, as both may change. This helps ensure your plans are based on the route as it can actually be used, rather than relying solely on the named sequence of places.

Sports facilities and getting there

The Hrdlořezy sports complex offers tennis, nohejbal (a Czech sport similar to volleyball), volleyball, hockeyball, basketball and small-sided football in particular. There is also a tennis practice wall and a children’s area with swings, a slide and a sandpit. Alongside its cultural and historical attractions, the village therefore offers specific opportunities for sport and play. Check the latest operating details before using the facilities, as these may change.

Regional daytime bus route 719 serves the Hrdlořezy, Přední důl stop. If you are planning to travel by bus, check the current timetable before setting off, as times and connections may change.
