Skalsko brings together architectural history, a historic landscape and cycling routes without merging these themes: St. Havel Church is a baroque building with older origins, while Zadní Hrádek is a Slavic hillfort and an archaeological interpretation. Two numbered cycling routes add different landscape connections to the area. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Skalsko, you can first decide whether cultural history, the historic landscape or cycling should shape your stay.

St. Havel Church: Architectural History and Floor Plan

The St. Havel Church complex stands on a raised hill in the centre of Skalsko. The church is a single-nave Baroque building dating from 1733–1734, created by remodelling an older Gothic church. Its Gothic origins and Baroque phase are therefore part of the same architectural development. The complex includes an enclosing wall, an entrance gate, a bell tower and the grounds of the former cemetery. The technical term “single-nave” describes a building with one main nave. The nave is rectangular; the semicircular presbytery is set back, while the chapel and sacristy are further elements of the floor plan. Those interested in church architecture can therefore consider the development from the Gothic predecessor to the Baroque building, as well as the individual architectural features.

Zadní Hrádek: Historic Landscape

A second historical point of interest lies in the northeastern part of Skalsko. A Slavic hillfort once stood on the rocky spur of Zadní Hrádek, which is also a natural monument. Here, the landform and former fortification take centre stage, whereas St. Havel is characterised primarily by its architecture and remodelling history. An archaeological indication suggests that Skalsko was connected with the vanished settlement of Skály. This settlement probably belonged to a possible Slavic hillfort, Skála, near Zadní Hrádek. The church’s architectural history and its connection with Skály therefore have different levels of certainty: the remodelling is a historical development, while the settlement connection remains a tentative interpretation. The hillfort points to the spur’s former use; its status as a natural monument is a separate aspect of the site.

Cycling Routes with Different Geographic Connections

Cycling routes No. 143 and 8159 are described differently. Cycling route No. 143 passes through the Skalsko area in the valley of the Strenický potok and connects Kokořínsko with Pojizeří. Towards Strenice, it continues through Skalsko to Lobeč Castle. The marked cycling route No. 8159 runs via Boreč and Malé Všelisy into the valley of the Košátecký potok. The routes therefore have different geographic connections: No. 143 links two landscape areas and continues towards Lobeč Castle, while No. 8159 passes through the named places into the valley. Route conditions and signage may change; check the route before setting off.
