Tuřice brings together the history of a former fortress site with the Jizera and its opportunities for cycling, walking and paddling trips. This offers several ways to explore the area: the river, historic traces in the village and a regional monument in Hlavenec. When planning a trip, you can first decide whether to focus mainly on activities by the water or on local history.

Cycling, Hiking and Paddling on the Jizera

The Greenway Jizera runs along the Jizera. It is suitable for cyclists, walkers and family outings. A cycle route through Tuřice leads from Prague in the direction of Liberec. The Greenway thus offers a riverside route for cycling and walking trips, while the cycle route through Tuřice indicates a direction between Prague and Liberec.

For a trip on the water, the season is an important consideration. A river guide dated 18 May 2022 describes the lower Jizera stretch near Tuřice as navigable by canoe and kayak almost all year round. Navigability depends on seasonal water levels; check current conditions before planning. The same river guide considers the stretch suitable for trips with children, although this assessment depends on water conditions and the paddlers’ abilities.

There is a car park on the right bank of the Jizera, by the Tuřice road bridge. A meadow above the bridge can be used as a launch area for a river trip. Check parking options and water levels on site. The landscape of the lower Jizera includes a sandy riverbed, lively rapids and green banks; it can change depending on the season and water level.

Fortress History and Local Tradition

A fortress stood near the settlement of Tuřice and is documented as early as 1194 through Zbraslav of Tuřice (“Zbraslaus de Turic”). The 1469 inheritance register mentions it as abandoned. The former site was in the “Na poustkách” fields and was completely destroyed during construction of the motorway towards Prague. The fortress is therefore part of the village’s history, not a surviving building that can be visited at the site today.

The Tuřice road bridge over the Jizera also has a specific historical date: it was built in 1924. The bridge and the former fortress represent different chapters of local history; one is part of the riverside landscape, while the other is now understood only as a historic site.

Local culture also includes the traditional Easter procession with rattles. It replaces the ringing of church bells and uses wooden noisemakers, including wheeled rattle carts. Cultural interest in Tuřice thus extends beyond architectural history and includes a custom with its own distinctive sound and characteristic instruments.

Another historical connection is in Hlavenec: the Braun hunting monument to Charles VI, commissioned by Count Špork in 1725, is located in the immediate vicinity of Tuřice and Sobětuchy. It adds a clearly situated regional point of interest to the local history.
