Stránov Castle combines a general tour with independent exhibition themes; the church and Windsurfing Museum in the courtyard complement the visit. Jizerní Vtelno also offers protected natural features and a history of technology. For planning, the castle’s seasonal opening and the different routes to the castle and through the village are particularly relevant.
Stránov Castle: Tour and Exhibitions
Stránov Castle was first opened to the public in 2004. Today, visits are seasonal; check the latest visitor information before travelling. A general tour includes a hall with a Gothic chapel, butterfly and beetle collections, and collections of historic prams and dolls. It also includes reconstructed interiors with replicas of historic furniture and the viewing point in the Gothic tower. The tour thus brings together religious, natural history, and everyday life themes with reconstructed interiors and a viewing point. Exhibition content may change.
The Church of St Wenceslas is located in the castle courtyard. It houses a permanent exhibition of paintings by Aleš Krejča, which can be visited during the castle’s opening hours. The castle’s seasonal opening times are therefore also important for visiting this exhibition. The Windsurfing Museum is housed in the Baroque granary in the courtyard. It displays historic windsurfing equipment and documentation, as well as boards, sails, and racing equipment. The paintings and the windsurfing collection provide distinct themes alongside the general castle tour.
Cultural Features in the Courtyard and Village
In the castle courtyard stands the protected large-leaved lime tree “Lípa na Stranově”; by the water basin is the protected group of western plane trees “Platany ve Stránově.” The condition of the trees and the number of surviving plane trees may change; check their current status on site.
The “Oříšková cesta,” named after Bedřich Smetana, is also one of the local cultural features. Two architectural landmarks offer different historical perspectives: the Church of St Wenceslas in the courtyard was built in 1767 to a design by the prominent Prague architect Filip Heger. The Stránov–Krnsko railway viaduct is a three-arch engineering monument dating from 1924. Together, the religious building and the engineering structure represent different approaches to the history of the village.
Getting There and Finding Your Way
Jizerní Vtelno is 10 km from the statutory city of Mladá Boleslav, in the direction of Mělník. This distance and direction provide a specific point of reference for locating the village in the region.
The yellow hiking trail leads to the castle from the Krnsko railway stop on the Prague–Mladá Boleslav line. You can also reach Stránov Castle via the same marked trail from the Jizerní Vtelno, Viaduct bus stop on road I/16. Check the castle’s latest access information before travelling.
For cycling plans, cycle route 8145 runs between Chotětov and Krnsko through Jizerní Vtelno. It uses Class III roads and local access roads; check the current signs on site. The routes serve different planning purposes: the yellow hiking trail leads to the castle, while the cycle route runs through the village between the settlements mentioned.
