Jabkenice reveals two sides of Bedřich Smetana’s life: his years at Jabkenická myslivna and a route that retraces his usual walk. The deaf Smetana lived at the myslivna with his family from 1875 to 1884; it is now home to the Bedřich Smetana Memorial. The Jahody se Smetanou route is part of the Skryté příběhy outdoor game and leads from the village into the forest, ending at the Bedřich Smetana Museum. The church and bell tower add Jabkenice’s architectural history to its cultural appeal. The focus on culture thus spans biographical remembrance, an outdoor walk, and architectural history.

Smetana’s Home and Exhibition

The memorial exhibition focuses on Smetana’s study and the family salon. The domestic setting is therefore at the heart of the exhibition, while Jahody se Smetanou connects with his usual walk outdoors. This distinction can help you choose how to explore Smetana’s years in Jabkenice. The exhibits may change; check the current exhibition focus before your visit.

The Jahody se Smetanou Route

Jahody se Smetanou is a route in the Skryté příběhy outdoor game. It is 4.5 kilometres long, has eight stops, and takes about 1.5 hours. The distance indicates the route’s length, the stops divide it into sections, and the approximate duration helps you estimate the time needed. Route details may change; check the latest information before setting out.

From the village of Jabkenice, the route leads into the forest along a path that retraces Smetana’s usual walk. A short detour takes you to the entrance to Jabkenická obora; the route then returns to the village and ends at the Bedřich Smetana Museum.

Church and Bell Tower

Another cultural highlight is the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Jabkenice. This early Gothic brick church has been protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic since 1958. East of the church is a 15th-century bell tower, one of the oldest surviving bell towers in the Czech Republic. The dates refer to different things: 1958 marks the church’s protected status, while the 15th century dates the tower. Early Gothic describes the architectural style; protected status and the tower’s date provide other points of reference.

Smetanovy Jabkenice

The Smetanovy Jabkenice festival is open to the general public and has been held in Jabkenice for more than a hundred years. Its long tradition provides a cultural backdrop, but it does not guarantee a specific date for your trip: check the dates and programme for the relevant edition, especially if you are looking for an interpreted event. Selected programme items are interpreted into Czech Sign Language; interpretation is not automatically provided throughout the festival, and future programmes may vary.
