Hradec is a distinct settlement with a predominantly recreational character. Northwest of the centre, on a broad promontory rising above the Jizera, lies Hradec hillfort. Its location, historic watch function and riverside landscape offer different points of interest for understanding the settlement’s history and planning a trip.

Hillfort and river ford

The hillfort dates from the 9th century and served as a watch post at an important river ford. The site stood above the river, while the ford served as a significant crossing.

On the southeast side, an earthwork up to 3 m high marks the boundary of the hillfort. The earthwork is not uniformly high and reaches a maximum of 3 m. A ditch lay in front of it, but is no longer visible today.

The history of the archaeological finds is also connected with Mnichovo Hradiště: several finds from the Hradec site are kept in the town museum there.

Cycling route and pilgrimage stage

Regional cycle route No. 8050 (223) passes through Mnichovo Hradiště, Sychrov, Hradec, Březina and Kurovodice. Check the current route markings before setting out.

The fourth stage of the Žitavská Svatojakubská cesta offers a different route perspective: it runs from Český Dub to Mnichovo Hradiště, passes through Hradec and is 22 km long. The 22 km refers to the stage, not to a stay in Hradec.

The Jizera and the regional landscape

Below Hradec, the Jizera flows past high rocky banks. On the right bank lies a natural feature characterised by marshes and poplars, traditionally known there as “ostrov”. For nature lovers, the Jizera landscape has two distinct aspects: high rocky banks below Hradec and the right-bank natural feature “ostrov”, characterised by marshes and poplars. The riverbanks and vegetation each lend the landscape a distinctive character.

On a broader regional scale, the route towards Kurovodice is a starting point for accessing the Český ráj Protected Landscape Area. This connection broadens the perspective on the region beyond the settlement and its hillfort. The hillfort and the Jizera are local features of Hradec; by contrast, the route towards Kurovodice and access to the Český ráj Protected Landscape Area belong to a regional scale. When choosing a destination, you can therefore distinguish between local history, riverside scenery and a broader connection with nature.

Putting Hradec in context as a travel destination

If you are considering Hradec as a destination for a holiday apartment, you can base your choice on your interests: the hillfort and its watch function, the Jizera landscape or one of the named routes. These offer different starting points for a trip focused on cultural history or scenery.
