Klášter Hradiště Nad Jizerou reveals its history in very different forms: the monastery’s founding was followed by its destruction, conversion into a chateau and use as a brewery; at the same time, the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary (Kostel Narození Panny Marie) preserves its own architectural history. Cycling and hiking trails offer another way to plan your visit, with routes that vary in type and stated duration.

Monastery Complex and Brewery

The monastery was founded in 1145 and destroyed by the Hussites in 1420. The ruins were converted into a chateau and turned into a brewery in 1852. The main portal of the original monastery survives in the former monastery courtyard. The north portal stands in the central part of the site as a freestanding wall. Its stepped portal ends in a pointed arch and is richly decorated with plant motifs.

The Klášter Brewery has rock cellars almost 20 metres deep, where the beer is still fermented and matured. Brewery tours have been suspended until further notice for technical reasons. If a tour is important to your trip, check in advance whether they have resumed.

Church and Crypt

Kostel Narození Panny Marie is a single-nave subsidiary church in the Gothic-Renaissance style and is protected by the Czech Republic as a cultural monument. It was built around 1560. On the north side of its nave, it preserves an Early Gothic portal. Thus, an Early Gothic architectural feature stands alongside the church’s Gothic-Renaissance classification.

The surviving crypt and a roofed fragment of the presbytery were reconstructed in 1997. The crypt was intended as a burial place for prominent members of the monastery; an archaeological investigation found graves carved into the rock. Access to the crypt is possible by prior arrangement, and the key can be borrowed from the municipal office. Arrange access and key collection before your visit.

Cycling and Hiking

Cycle Route 223 runs via Svijany and Mnichovo Hradiště to Klášter Hradiště Nad Jizerou. A 55-kilometre circular cycling route runs from Mladá Boleslav via Mnichovo Hradiště and back, passing through the town and by the former chateau-brewery complex. The second route is therefore a designated circuit with a stated total distance; Cycle Route 223 is identified by its number and the places it passes.

For a hike, a blue-marked trail runs from Mnichovo Hradiště to Klášter Hradiště Nad Jizerou: it is 17.3 kilometres long and listed as taking five hours. Compared with the 55-kilometre cycling circuit, it is a different type of tour. Before setting off, check the current route and conditions, as trail conditions, signage and surfaces can change.
