Vinec brings together Romanesque church architecture and traces of rural and industrial history. At St. Nicholas Church, the floor plan and portal are as distinctive as the other features of the protected ensemble; House No. 45 and the history of milling offer a glimpse of other architectural forms. For planning your trip, there is also a cycling route through Vinec and paths connected with the Jizera. You can therefore explore the village through its monuments or combine an interest in culture and routes.

Romanesque St. Nicholas Church

St. Nicholas is one of the most significant Romanesque religious buildings in Bohemia. Its unusual floor plan sets a square nave against a polygonal presbytery. At the portal, columns flank a relief of the Crucifixion. For architecture enthusiasts, this offers a clear comparison between the geometric ground plan and the figurative design of the entrance. Since 2008, the church has been a National Cultural Monument of the Czech Republic.

Ensemble and historic architectural forms

The protected church ensemble includes a cemetery wall with a gate and a fragment of a stone cross. The ensemble therefore draws attention not only to the church but also to these other architectural features.

House No. 45 is another historic architectural form: this two-storey timber house with an external gallery dates from 1803 and was part of a former large farm on the western outskirts of Vinec. Only the residential section is protected. It offers another perspective on local architectural history, distinct from that of the religious building.

Milling history on the Jizera

The mill in Vinec was built in 1813 and had six millstones. The year it was built marks its historical beginnings, while the number of millstones gives a specific indication of its technical equipment. Another example of the use of water can be found in Podvinec: on the banks of the Jizera, opposite a long-abandoned mill, stands a small hydroelectric plant that has recently been renovated. The two places have different features: here, a mill with its millstones; there, a small power station by the river.

Cycling and hiking routes

Cycle Route No. 143 runs through Vinec between Krnsko and ÄŚejetice. A visitor guide updated on August 18, 2024, also describes a red-marked hiking trail from Krnsko along the Jizera River to Vinec. On the way to Vinec, Route 17 of the Jizera Greenway also follows the Jizera. The information describes routes that differ in course and mode of travel: the cycle route runs through Vinec between the two named places; Krnsko is the starting point for the marked hiking trail, while Route 17 is described as a riverside route on the way to Vinec. Check the current trail conditions before setting out.

The Jizera Greenway connects natural landscapes with cultural monuments and is suitable for cyclists, walkers and families with children. It therefore provides a broader framework for travellers interested in both culture and landscapes.

Check in advance about visiting the interior

According to a visitor guide updated on August 18, 2024, it was possible to visit the interior of St. Nicholas Church; the guide’s contact point was at the cemetery gate. Before your visit, check locally whether an interior visit is currently possible.
