Bezno brings together two distinct periods: finds attest to Early Neolithic settlement, while the château, rectory and church define the town’s Baroque history. This provides a clear focus for a cultural stay. You can distinguish the early settlement history from the later building history while also exploring several aspects of the local heritage.

Early Traces and a Baroque Ensemble

Finds from the Early Neolithic period attest to settlement in Bezno between 4500 and 4000 BC. The Baroque settlement ensemble comprises a newly built château, a rectory and a remodelled church. The ensemble therefore represents several aspects of the town’s history, not just a single building. The contrast between the periods is significant: archaeological settlement dates back millennia before the Baroque building phase. If you want to put the town’s history in context, you can start with the finds and then consider how the later buildings relate to one another.

Church of Saints Peter and Paul

The Church of Saints Peter and Paul was built by E. Kondel in 1768–1769. It replaced a medieval church building first mentioned in 1369. There are around four centuries between this early mention and the new building: the year 1369 refers to its predecessor, not to the 18th-century church. The church stands on higher ground overlooking the château grounds. The sculpture group Kalvárie is also located by the church and is another point of interest for sacred art in Bezno. Baroque statues were also erected in Bezno around significant buildings and in other locations, in addition to Kalvárie.

A municipal notice dated 10 June 2026 lists public Masses at the church every second Saturday of the month at 14:00. If you plan to attend a service, check the date before you travel.

Bezno Château and Its Architecture

Bezno Château was built in 1750 as a Late Baroque château on the site of a medieval fortress. The year 1750 therefore refers to the château, while the fortress belongs to the earlier history of the site. The building consists of a two-storey main block with a central risalit, a projecting section of the façade topped by a pediment and featuring a balcony. Two curved, two-storey side wings enclose the courtyard of honour. This is the courtyard framed by the wings, which are therefore part of the described architectural ensemble.

A description updated in 2005 lists the château as not open to the public. Check current access arrangements before you travel.

Bezno in Its Regional Context

The significant protected landscape areas of Český ráj and Kokořínsko lie near Bezno. They complement the local building history with a regional landscape perspective. When choosing a destination, you can consider whether what matters most to you is the history of the town’s Baroque buildings or the nearby protected areas as well.
