The Church of St. Francis of Assisi in Dolní Slivno acquired its present Empire-style appearance in 1807–1808. Other historical points of interest include the Salač Column on the old field path to Mečeříž and the monument to Vincencie Tirschová in Sokol Park in Dolní Slivno. In Slivínko, traces of the fortress survive as a small, densely overgrown island in a pond; a small-leaved lime tree also grows there. Architecture, remembrance, archaeology and landscape thus offer distinct themes to consider when planning a trip.
Landscape and Nature
Dolní Slivno lies on the Slivenská vysočina plateau, which forms part of the Dolnojizerská tabule. The two names place the village at different geographical levels: the plateau is part of the named landscape area. Another piece of information about nature concerns Slivínko. A small-leaved lime tree grows there, estimated to be 120 to 150 years old. This age range is an estimate and adds a specific natural feature to the landscape perspective.
Church, Column and Monument
The date 1807–1808 refers to the present Empire-style appearance of the Church of St. Francis of Assisi. It therefore establishes the timeframe for its current architectural form. When considering the history of the village, it is worth distinguishing this form from the dates associated with other landmarks: they do not all refer to the same event.
Anna and Jiří Salač had the six-metre-high Salač Column erected in 1699. An iron cross crowns the monument, which stands on an old field path to Mečeříž. The year dates the erection of the column; the date given for the church, by contrast, refers to the creation of its present form. The two historical time references can therefore be compared without treating them as equivalent.
The monument to Vincencie Tirschová stands in Sokol Park in Dolní Slivno. It commemorates the mother of Miroslav Tyrš, founder of the Sokol movement, and was ceremonially unveiled in 1934. Both the personal connection behind the memorial and the date of its unveiling are therefore known. Together with the column and the church, the monument offers further perspectives on the village’s history: its erection, present architectural form and ceremonial unveiling refer to different historical events.
Fortress Traces in Slivínko
Archaeological finds date the existence of the Slivínko fortress to the 14th century. The fortress site survives to this day as a small, densely overgrown island in a pond. The features described include a trapezoidal bank platform with traces of ditches and the remains of a rectangular cellar. The dating answers a different question from the description of the surviving form: the finds place the fortress’s existence in time, while the island, platform and cellar remains describe its visible features. The history of the site can thus be considered both through its archaeological classification and its physical form.
Cycle Route and Annual Event
Cycle route No. 8156 passes through Slivínko at kilometre 10 and reaches Dolní Slivno at kilometre 11. The route number and the two kilometre references help locate these points when planning a route. The Svatováclavský běh is also held annually in Dolní Slivno. As event dates may vary, check the date for your chosen travel period before your trip.
