The Vlkava flows through the centre of Kosořice; the village square and a bridge are associated with several historical landmarks. There are also landscaped green spaces by Kosořický Pond and the recurring “Pálení čarodějnic” (Witches’ Night). This gives you different interests to consider when choosing a destination: monuments, waterside scenery or a festive event at the end of April. When choosing a holiday apartment, it may help to ask whether village history, the pond surroundings or the event is the deciding factor for you.
Village history around the square and bridge
The chapel on the village square bears a memorial plaque to those who fell in the First World War and a bust of T. G. Masaryk. Beside the bridge over the Vlkava stands the listed statue of Saint John of Nepomuk. It dates from 1794 and was restored in 1949, 1997 and 2021. These restorations span the 20th and 21st centuries. Another statue, that of the Immaculate Virgin Mary, dates from 1883.
The cross by the bridge dates from 1867. Residents of Kosořice erected it after the 1866 war and a devastating cholera epidemic. The cross near Štěpánových is the focus of a different local story: the Štěpán family had it erected; their farmstead had stood there since the end of the 18th century. The farmstead was later given a new Baroque appearance under Countess Eleonora of Valdštejn.
River, ponds and practical information
The Vlkava flows through the centre of Kosořice. The municipality landscaped green spaces on the dam and around Kosořický Pond; the nearby surroundings offer a pleasant setting for relaxation. The site of the former fortress is believed to have been near a farmyard by Močický Pond; its remains had already disappeared by the 18th century. The two ponds have different associations: Kosořický Pond is known for its green spaces and recreation, while Močický Pond is associated with the presumed site of the fortress.
The railway station in Voděrady is about 2 km from the centre of Kosořice. If you plan to travel by train, check the current timetable. No marked KČT hiking trail passes through Kosořice. As trail conditions may change, it is advisable to check the latest information before planning a hike.
A recurring event at the end of April
The recurring Kosořice event “Pálení čarodějnic” (Witches’ Night) takes place on the last day of April in the forest park by the sports ground near the pond. A children’s lantern procession goes from the fire station to the large bonfire. The event also includes traditional competitions for young children and sausage roasting. Unlike the historical dates associated with the monuments, the date of this event varies from year to year; check it in advance.
