At Benátky nad Jizerou Castle, historic architecture meets an interactive exhibition about Tycho Brahe. Other highlights for your stay include church art, the story of Bedřich Smetana and protected landscapes along the Jizera.

Castle, Museum and Places of Remembrance

The castle was built in the early 16th century on the ruins of a Cyriac monastery. It houses the Muzeum Benátecka. Its interactive exhibition focuses on Tycho Brahe and prehistoric and medieval astronomy. Figurative sgraffiti were added to the eastern side of the castle in 1599. Part of the castle cellars also has a cultural use: cultural and social events are held there.

The young musician Bedřich Smetana’s time in Benátky nad Jizerou from 1844 to 1847 is commemorated in three different places. A plaque is located at the castle entrance, a memorial room opened in the museum in 1957, and a monument was unveiled in the upper part of the castle park in 1974. The memorials therefore differ both in form and location.

Church Art Through the Centuries

The castle church of Narození Panny Marie is connected to the castle by a gallery. It was consecrated on 25 February 1349, and its original form was Early Gothic. The tower serves as an observation tower. The church thus brings together a medieval consecration, an early architectural style and a later viewing function.

The church of sv. Máří Magdaleny reflects a different architectural period. It was built between 1561 and 1570 in the Late Gothic style and restored in the Baroque style in 1664, particularly on the façade and in the interiors. Those interested in historic architectural styles will find two distinct developments here: the original Early Gothic form of the castle church, and the Late Gothic construction period followed by a later Baroque restoration at sv. Máří Magdaleny.

Jizera Landscapes and Protected Nature

The Stará Jizera natural monument includes oxbow lakes in a meander of the Jizera between the Dražice district of Benátky nad Jizerou and the municipality of Horky nad Jizerou. It protects a relatively well-preserved complex of wetlands and meadows with scattered, mighty oak trees. It is considered one of the last examples of a floodplain ecosystem along the Jizera. This landscape offers a different focus from the historic buildings: here, the emphasis is on waterways and floodplain habitats.

The Slepeč natural monument extends partly across the cadastral areas of Benátky nad Jizerou and Kochánky and covers a total of 7.75 hectares. It is primarily protected for the presence of the lady’s-slipper orchid, which is critically endangered in the Jizera area. The castle vineyards are also part of the landscape heritage: they lie on sunny southeastern slopes above the Jizera, on rocky ground that provided favourable conditions for successful wine growing.

The Měsíc lake is geographically connected to the Stará Jizera natural monument: the lake is part of the protected area, and the Žitava branch of the Way of St James enters the cadastral area of Benátky nad Jizerou there. This provides a way to distinguish between the river landscape, protected habitats and a section of the Way of St James when exploring this area.

Educational Trail and Planning Your Stay

The “Benátecká stopa” is a 1.5-kilometre educational trail around the castle grounds. It is intended for parents with children aged 6 to 15 and is suitable for every season. Please confirm locally whether the worksheets are currently available before your visit.

Another digital activity is the mobile experience app “Setkání hvězdných astronomů”. It features 13 stations with tasks; the game takes about 45 minutes and covers approximately 1.2 kilometres. The two activities therefore provide different details for planning: “Benátecká stopa” is described as an educational trail around the castle grounds, while the app has an approximate duration and route length.
