Postřižín lies about 15 km north of Prague. Its local history has tangible reference points in a first written mention dating from 1052, a chapel in the town center, and the biographies of two people born here. Other features include an English oak designated as a natural monument, a Jewish cemetery nearby, and a multi-purpose sports ground. This gives you the option of focusing your trip on local history, cultural heritage or active recreation.

Location and Getting There

Postřižín is located on State Road 608 and the D8 motorway towards Prague–Dresden. Public transport is provided by routes 370, 374 and 663 of the Prague Integrated Transport system. Routes, timetables and road conditions can change; check the latest information for your travel date.

Local History and Notable Places

The first written mention of Postřižín dates from 1052. A Latin document written by Prince Břetislav I uses the form “Postrizine”. The chapel was built in 1893 and stands on a small village square in the center of Postřižín. Together, the early written mention and a specific building from the late 19th century offer distinct historical reference points.

The landscape is also described with specific local details: the cadastral area slopes from southeast to northwest. Its highest point is at the place known as I. Špičák, at 290 m above the Adriatic. In the built-up area, beside house No. 87 on the road to Zlonice, stands an English oak designated as a natural monument.

Notable People and Cultural Heritage

Karel Hausman, a patriotic priest and writer, was born in Postřižín on 30 April 1812. He compiled an early Czech map showing the type and number of livestock in individual municipalities. His biography links local history with a specific way of recording community life.

Discus thrower František Janda Suk was also born in Postřižín, in 1878. He was an Olympic medalist and the first Czech track-and-field athlete to set a discus-throw record using the rotational technique. Hausman’s map focuses on municipal data, while Janda Suk’s story centers on the development of a sporting technique: both lives offer different perspectives on local history.

The Jewish Cemetery lies near Postřižín, about 800 m southeast of the town center; a field track also leads to it. Two hundred gravestones or fragments of gravestones have been preserved. The oldest date from 1831 and the most recent from 1935. As its physical condition may change, check the latest information before visiting.

Events and Active Recreation

The 2023 edition of the Gulášfest featured a parkour workshop, a magic show, live bands and fairground rides for children. The 2022 Pálení Čarodějnic celebration included children’s competitions, a bonfire and a fire show. These program details apply to the respective years. If an event is important to your travel plans, check the latest dates.

The multi-purpose sports ground is used for active recreation by the general public, ball games, and events organized by local clubs and associations. If you plan to use it, check the current rules, as operating conditions may change.
