The Elbe and architectural history give Dolní Beřkovice two clear landmarks: a church complex sits on higher ground above the river, while a cycle route runs along the riverbank through the town. There is also a ship lock, a castle with a history dating back to 1606, and other religious buildings in Vliněves. The town can therefore be understood through its river landscape, cycling and architectural history.
Riverside location and distinctive buildings
The single-nave Church of the Beheading of St John the Baptist (Kostel Stětí sv. Jana Křtitele) has an extended presbytery with a semicircular end and a prismatic tower. The complex stands on elevated ground above the Elbe and is surrounded by a terrace wall. The presbytery is the choir area of the church; together with the single-nave layout and prismatic tower, this term helps identify the building’s individual parts.
Dolní Beřkovice Castle dates from 1606 and was remodelled into its present form in 1853. The two dates place the castle’s origins and its later transformation in their historical context.
The ship lock also provides a concrete measure of the town’s water infrastructure. Its large chamber measures 200.0 × 22.0 metres, and the small one 85.0 × 11.0 metres. This makes the small chamber less than half as long and exactly half as wide as the large one. If you are planning a specific visit, check the operating conditions, as they may change.
Cycle routes and a place to rest
There are two different reference points for cycling. The cycle route from Horní Počaply to Zelčín runs along the banks of the Elbe through Dolní Beřkovice. The Dolní Beřkovice–Račice cycle route is described as having a smooth asphalt surface and a flat elevation profile. The first route is notable for following the river through the town, while the second is described in terms of its surface and elevation profile. Check current conditions before setting off.
The Na Knížecí inn remains a meeting place and rest stop for tourists and cyclists. Check current services on site. The inn also has a historical connection: the Zemský vinařský spolek pro Království české was founded there in 1881. Its founding connects the town with the history of the winegrowing organisation in the Kingdom of Bohemia.
Churches and cemetery in Vliněves
Under the municipal regulation adopted in 2020, the public cemetery in Dolní Beřkovice is accessible without set opening hours and is not locked. Temporary restrictions are possible, so check before your visit whether any are in effect.
In the cadastral area of Vliněves, within the municipality of Dolní Beřkovice, the Chapel of St Joseph (kaple sv. Josefa) is part of the public cemetery. The protected site “hřbitov s kaplí sv. Josefa” comprises a rectangular cemetery with a small Neo-Romanesque chapel on the axis of the main entrance. The church in Vliněves dates from 1866 and stands on the site of a Romanesque central-plan church.
