On the right bank of the Elbe, Ovčáry lies in the lowland Polabí region. The municipal area is part of the central Polabí region within the Bohemian Table and has an almost level landscape at around 166 metres above sea level. Ovčáry lies in a moderately warm, dry district with mild winters.
Landscape along the Elbe
In the southern part of the cadastral area, some places transition into reed-covered wetlands as a result of the straightening of the Elbe during the First Republic. Jezero Křenek is located near Ovčáry and is a recreational lake with sandy beaches. Fields surround three sides of the lake, while the fourth is lined with forest. Only a small part of Jezero Křenek extends into the cadastral area of Ovčáry. Visitors also call the lake Jezero Ovčáry; the Water Ski Club is also located within the lake complex.
Village centre and local history
The area between the cross near the municipal office and the bell tower with its pond is considered the village centre today. The cross, erected in 1881, has carved reliefs of saints on its sides. The memorial to Ovčáry residents who fell in the First World War was created by the stonemason Břetislav Vobořil from Kralupy. The bell of Ovčáry is considered the oldest in the surrounding area. The two memorial sites have different emphases: the cross bears reliefs of saints, while the memorial commemorates those who fell in the First World War.
Following the reconstruction of the bell tower, the original bell is kept at the municipal office for fear of theft; a replica stands in its original place. If seeing the original bell is important to you, check locally before your visit to see whether it can be viewed.
Former crops also offer a glimpse of local agriculture: cucumbers, cabbage, onions and garlic were among the most important vegetable crops grown in Ovčáry.
