Chorušice can be explored through two distinct themes: Baroque religious buildings and a nature trail covering local nature, sights and history. The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and the chapel on the village square give a visit to the village a clear cultural and historical focus. Those who also want to take in the landscape can include the four-kilometre Chorušická zákoutí nature trail in their plans. A cycle route through Chorušice and the district of Velký Újezd offers a second, considerably longer route. This gives visitors a choice of buildings and different routes as separate themes for their stay.
Landscape at a transition
Chorušice lies 18 kilometres northeast of Mělník, where the Polabí Plain, the rolling landscape of the Dolnojizerská Tableland and the Kokořínsko region, which gives way to more varied terrain, meet. This geographical setting identifies not just one landscape, but three distinct points of reference: a plain, rolling terrain and a more varied landscape. For planning purposes, this setting provides a framework for considering the village’s natural surroundings alongside its religious buildings.
Church and chapel
The Baroque pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is also the Roman Catholic deanery church and Chorušice’s most significant landmark. The present building was constructed between 1714 and 1716, replacing an older church that was considered to be in a serious state of disrepair. At the centre of the presbytery, or altar area, is a miraculous image of Our Lady of Sorrows. The building’s construction dates, its predecessor and its religious furnishings each offer a different point of reference for understanding the church’s cultural history.
The Baroque chapel on the village square was built in 1716, and its decoration is connected with that of the deanery church. The eastern niche, facing the church, depicts Our Lady of Sorrows; the western niche depicts Saint John of Nepomuk. The recurring motif of Our Lady of Sorrows provides a specific link between the two buildings. At the same time, the depiction of Saint John of Nepomuk adds another saintly figure to the chapel’s decoration.
Nature trail and cycle route
The Chorušická zákoutí nature trail starts in Chorušice at a revitalised water reservoir and runs through a sandstone valley south of the village. Over four kilometres, it provides information about local nature, sights and partisan activity during the Second World War. Ten information boards or play elements present the material in an entertaining way. The trail is designed for a broad audience, from preschool children to adults. It thus combines an experience of a specific landscape with local nature and history.
For a longer route, consider cycle route No. 8146. Part of the Greenway Jizera, it is 29.9 kilometres long and passes through Chorušice and the district of Velký Újezd. Compared with the four-kilometre nature trail, it is a considerably longer option and offers a different type of activity: cycling. The two routes can therefore be distinguished by their desired length and theme: the nature trail covers local nature, sights and recent history, while the cycle route offers a longer ride. Before setting out, check local conditions on the nature trail and the current course of the cycle route, as its details may change.
