Kokořín is known for its varied historic buildings and a landscape shaped by sandstone. Hrad Kokořín offers a self-guided tour featuring a defensive tower and a historical exhibition. Zámek Kokořín gives the village square its distinctive character, but is not open to the public. The Kokořínské Pokličky are also located near Kokořín. These differences can help you plan your stay around your main interest: visiting the castle, seeing the architecture on the village square, or exploring the natural landscape.

Hrad Kokořín: Castle Complex and Tour

The protected Hrad Kokořín complex includes the Old and New Palaces, the main tower and the stair tower. It also includes a stair terrace with a rock chamber on the north side of the castle courtyard, the curtain wall, a bridge and the outer bailey. A well is part of the complex, although it lies outside the castle itself; a stable was carved into the rock. The site thus combines palaces and towers with features carved into the rock or located outside the main castle area.

You can reach Hrad Kokořín by car from three directions. You can leave your vehicle in the last car park below the castle; from there, it is less than a kilometre uphill to the castle. Check the parking conditions before setting off. This allows you to include the walk in your plans without assuming a walking time that has not been specified.

The second tour at Hrad Kokořín is self-guided. It includes climbing the 37.5-metre-high defensive tower, which offers views of the surrounding landscape, and visiting a historical exhibition in the cellar. The tour therefore combines two distinct stops: the view from above and the exhibition inside the castle. As the tour itinerary may change, check the current visitor rules before your trip.

Zámek Kokořín and the Village Square

Zámek Kokořín stands in the centre of the municipality of Kokořín. The Baroque chateau, dating from the mid-18th century, includes farm buildings. It is single-storey, with a red facade, corner towers and an onion dome. The Sweerts-Špork family had it built as a country residence. These features give the building a different character from the castle complex: its Baroque design and role as a country residence define its appearance, rather than a self-guided tour.

Zámek Kokořín is not open to the public. At the same time, it remains a prominent feature of the village square and an interesting sight when exploring the Kokořín Valley. Check the current access conditions before planning a visit. On the village square in front of Zámek stands a Baroque sculpture group of Saint Nicholas of Tolentino, dating from 1700. The year refers to the sculpture group; the chateau dates from the mid-18th century.

Nature Reserve and Sandstone Landscape

The Kokořínský důl Nature Reserve also includes the cadastral area of Kokořín. Landscape features in the protected area include sandstone terrain with gorge valleys, rock ledges, small rock cities and formations shaped by weathering, including the Pokličky. The range extends from gorges and rock ledges to distinctive weathered sandstone formations.

The area also includes extensive wetlands: spring areas and bodies of water, the Pšovka and its tributaries, reed beds, sedge marshes and wet meadows, as well as alder and ash-alder floodplain forests. Kokořínský důl is therefore defined not only by its rocks from a nature perspective; waterways and wetland habitats are also among the landscape features described.

The Kokořínské Pokličky are located near Kokořín, where Kokořínský Důl and Vojtěšský Důl meet. These sandstone formations, shaped by erosion, reach heights of up to 12 metres. The path leading to them is accessible to all age groups. The Pokličky therefore offer a specific focus on individual sandstone formations, while the nature reserve also includes gorges, rock ledges and wetlands.
