Hostín u Vojkovic combines a rich church and architectural history with a specific natural feature: Selská tůň on the northern edge of the village. The parish church and the cemetery chapel tell different chapters of the village’s history; the water, floodplain forest and open countryside add to the picture of the area. When planning your journey, it is important to note that Hostín u Vojkovic is accessible only via road II/101.

Church and chapel: different architectural histories

The parish church, Kostel Nanebevzetí Panny Marie, is a Romanesque and Early Gothic sacred building. After 1615, it was partly remodelled in the Renaissance style, and further changes were made in the Baroque style in the 18th century. The Gothic south portal and the Early Gothic presbytery have been preserved. The church thus brings together early architectural features and later alterations; it cannot be reduced to a single building phase.

The historical dates also provide two distinct reference points: the church is mentioned as a parish church as early as 1290, while its first mention dates from 1320. These details add the village’s early ecclesiastical status to its architectural history. Together with the later alterations, they provide a perspective spanning the Middle Ages through the Baroque period.

The cemetery chapel, Kaple Božího těla, provides a different architectural accent. It was built in the Baroque style from 1735 to 1736 under the direction of the Italian Jeroným Costa. Its distinctive floor plan is circular: the interior diameter is 12 metres and the exterior diameter is 17 metres. These two measurements make the form of the round building tangible and clearly distinguish the chapel from the older parish church.

Selská tůň and the open countryside

Selská tůň lies on the northern edge of Hostín u Vojkovic. It is a natural-looking body of water with shoreline communities and floodplain forest, and is a remnant of a naturally deepened section of a meander of the Vltava. The area is also a habitat for specially protected amphibian, reptile and bird species. The shape of the water feature and its habitats give this part of the village a distinctive natural character, different from the architectural history centred around the church and chapel.

Hostín u Vojkovic is situated in a wide, flat and open area along the Labe and Vltava rivers. The open surroundings, as well as the individual pond landscape, are therefore part of the region’s character. In the wider region around Hostín u Vojkovic, fruit and vegetable growing and sugar beet cultivation have a long tradition, owing to the soil and climate. This agricultural history adds another aspect of rural life to the natural and architectural history.

Local amenities and getting there

The village has a football pitch, as well as a tennis and volleyball court with artificial lighting and appropriate facilities. These sports facilities form a distinct part of the local amenities, alongside the historic buildings and the natural landscape. The village offers a variety of features that travellers can weigh differently when planning a trip: architecture, landscape, agriculture and sports facilities.

The road connection is essential for getting there: Hostín u Vojkovic is accessible only via road II/101 from Neratovice to Kralupy nad Vltavou. There is no rail connection or other transport link.
