Vlačice can be viewed through two themes: the construction history of Vlačická Fortress and the marked Cycling Route 0113, which passes through the town. This gives you different starting points for planning your trip: you can focus on historic architecture or take the route into account when cycling. The fortress dates back to the 14th century, while much of its present appearance was created around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Its origins and present-day appearance therefore belong to different historical periods.

Vlačická Fortress: Origins and Transformation

Most of Vlačická Fortress’s present appearance dates from around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. During this period, it was converted into a chicory-drying plant. The fortress’s long history therefore cannot be reduced to an unchanged medieval building. Only part of the surrounding masonry is original, too. These differences help distinguish its early origins from later changes, rather than attributing its present appearance to a single construction phase.

The listed complex includes a granary and two farm buildings. The fortress should therefore also be viewed as part of a complex: besides the fortress itself, other buildings are among its named components. Those interested in historic sites can thus see several types of buildings, rather than only the development of a single structure.

Other Historic Buildings

House No. 2 in Vlačice was built of solid stone around the middle of the 19th century. To this day, it retains large windows in their original arrangement. Compared with the fortress’s long history, the house has a more narrowly defined construction period and a specific surviving feature. The date is approximate: it refers to the middle of the 19th century, not an exact year of construction.

The small house next to the Vlačický sheepfold is assigned to the first half of the 19th century based on its similar construction style. This classification is based on a comparison of construction styles and should therefore be understood differently from a precise date. The Vlačický sheepfold itself is a manor sheepfold. The different buildings and their dates can thus be considered separately, without combining them into a single construction history.

Cycling on Route 0113

Marked Cycling Route 0113 passes through Vlačice and connects Rohozec, Žehušice, Bojmany, Vlačice, Vrdy, Žleby, and Zehuby. This adds a route-based perspective to the town’s historic themes: the fortress represents a complex construction history, while the cycling route links several of the places named here. If you include Cycling Route 0113 in your plans, check the current signage before setting off. This will help you take the route and practical navigation into account without assuming a specific journey time.

The Wider Landscape Context

Žehušicko offers a perspective that extends beyond the individual town. It is considered an exceptionally well-preserved example of Baroque urban planning and a Baroque-designed cultural landscape. This includes avenues, parks, and game reserves in the Žehušicko-Nové Dvory estate. This regional perspective complements the study of individual buildings with the design of towns and landscapes. It offers a distinct cultural and historical viewpoint alongside Vlačická Fortress, the houses, and the cycling route.

When choosing themes for your trip, you can therefore decide what matters most to you: architectural history, a cycling route, or the wider landscape context. Vlačice offers specific historic points of interest and Cycling Route 0113 as different starting points for planning.
