Červené Janovice can be explored through several distinct themes: traces of a 14th-century water castle, later castle architecture, ecclesiastical building history, public art and the Katlov pond with its recreational area. This gives you a choice of whether to focus on historic architectural features, a local monument or an activity on the water during your stay. When looking for a holiday apartment in Červené Janovice, this selection can help you match the purpose of your trip to the character of the place.
Castle Remains and Castle Architecture
A masonry bridge, ramparts and other remains at Červené Janovice Castle mark the site of a former water castle dating from the 14th century. The conversion of the former fortress into a magnificent castle is attributed to the stucco artist Karel Bretani from Vlach and dated to 1600. Preserved Renaissance arcades in the castle courtyard are now glazed. The water castle and the Renaissance arcades belong to different historical phases in the development of the castle complex.
Churches and Public Art
The history of ecclesiastical architecture adds precise dates to the story of the place. The new church was consecrated on 15 October 1911 by Bishop Th. Dr. Josef Doubrava. During repairs to St Martin’s Church in 1875, original Gothic stone window surrounds were discovered; the window behind the altar also had its original Gothic form. A window surround is the stone framing around a window opening.
The statue of the young fisherman has stood at Na Městečku for more than 100 years. Carved from Hořice sandstone in 1911, it was professionally restored in 2025 and returned to its pedestal. Its year of creation and material give the figure a specific art-historical context; the restoration adds a more recent phase of preservation to its long history. Another cultural example is the traditional Staročeské máje Maypole procession: Sokol Červené Janovice organised it in Janovice on Saturday, 11 May 2024. The fisherman statue and fishing at Katlov offer different ways of engaging with the theme: one as a work of art, the other as an activity.
