Sudějov is shaped above all by the pilgrimage complex of St. Anne. The complex includes chapels and a Lourdes grotto; the spring and pilgrimage tradition are also connected with the history of the place. There are several ways to plan your trip: explore the church’s architectural history and sacred imagery, attend a service, or visit during one of the annual pilgrimage events. Sudějov is also set in a picturesque landscape of forests and fields.

St. Anne: Church and Pilgrimage Complex

The Baroque pilgrimage Church of St. Anne was built from 1724 and consecrated the following year. The pilgrimage complex, with its covered walkways, towers and chapels, was completed in 1742. The dates mark different stages: the church was consecrated in 1725, and the entire complex was completed in 1742. St. Anne is a single-nave building with a recessed, three-sided chancel. “Recessed” describes its set-back position relative to the nave; the three-sided termination is another feature of the church’s architecture.

Chapels, Imagery and Exhibition

The chapels at the pilgrimage site were decorated by the renowned Czech painter Václav Kramolín. A painting in the first chapel depicts the Assumption of Mary; the third chapel is dedicated to the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The vault of the Chapel of St. James features a painting depicting the liberation of Vienna from the Turks by Jan Sobieski in 1683. The subjects therefore range from a Marian theme and the Crucifixion to a historical event. The complex also includes a Lourdes grotto with a statue of the Virgin Mary.

Opposite the church stands the reconstructed Baroque rectory. You can visit a small exhibition there about the origins and history of the pilgrimage site. It offers a distinct perspective on the complex’s history, complementing the architecture and chapels.

Services and Pilgrimage Dates

According to parish information available as of 25 August 2026, pilgrims and visitors can attend Mass at St. Anne’s Church every Saturday at 6 p.m. Check the date before your trip. The popular annual pilgrimage festival in honour of Saint Anne takes place at the pilgrimage site on 26 July; the programme may change. The revived Svatoanenská pilgrimage is also attended by several hundred people each year, although visitor numbers may vary. Mass offers a weekly opportunity to attend, while the festival takes place on a fixed date each year. If you plan your trip around either event, check the relevant information in advance.

Spring and Landscape

The spring in Sudějov was believed to have miraculous properties from early on. Sudějov owes its origins and name to the spring. In 1843, the spring water was channelled to a separate, freely accessible chapel on the village square in front of the church.

The rectory exhibition, the church and the pilgrimage dates give Sudějov a distinct cultural and historical focus. The forests and fields of the picturesque landscape add a natural dimension to the character of the place. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Sudějov, these different interests can help you decide whether the place suits your planned stay.
