The Church of St. James, the history of Viktorova vila and walks along the Paběnický potok show three sides of Paběnice. If you are looking for a holiday rental for your stay, you can use them to decide whether you are more interested in architecture, local history or the landscape.
Church and Local History
The Church of St. James is a defining landmark of Paběnice. The Baroque building is single-nave and has a polygonal presbytery. The architectural term “single-nave” describes an interior arranged around a main nave; the presbytery is the chancel containing the altar area. “Polygonal” means having several sides and here describes the shape of this space. The architectural details therefore concern different aspects: the layout of the interior and the shape of the presbytery. The church also has a surviving cemetery enclosure wall.
Another episode in the town’s history takes us to Viktorova vila. On 20 December 1957, Prague Archbishop Josef Beran and Bishops Karel Skoupý and Josef Hlouch were housed there. They were probably under the supervision of the 3rd Directorate of the SNB. The villa adds a dated 20th-century episode to the architectural history of the church.
Landscape and Walks
The Paběnický potok has a steep gradient and flows through a gorge-like valley. The slopes on both sides are covered with hornbeams, hazel shrubs and coniferous forests; picturesque spots add character in places. The landscape invites you to walk through forests and over slopes, past ponds and along the stream. On a walk, you can focus on the shape of the valley and the stream, or on the forests, slopes and ponds.
A municipal development plan for 2016–2025 also reports that the noble crayfish has been appearing again in the Paběnický potok for some time. Alongside the terrain and vegetation, this wildlife observation adds a natural-history perspective on the stream.
More Places to Visit Locally and in the Region
Among the sights and places of interest in Paběnice is the Paběnický mlýn. A local cycling guide describes the route designated as cycle route 0097 as running through the entire municipal area. Check the local signage before setting off.
Kutná Hora lies 16 km southeast of Paběnice. The historic centre of Kutná Hora, the Church of St. Barbara and the Cathedral of the Assumption of Our Lady in Sedlec have been on the World Heritage List since 1995. The churches can also be distinguished: the Church of St. James is a local landmark in Paběnice; the Church of St. Barbara is one of the named elements on the World Heritage List. Thus, local architectural and town history and the broader heritage context offer distinct points of interest.
