Čáslav offers a range of themes for a stay: Náměstí J. Žižky square represents the historic city layout, churches and towers point to architectural and local history, and the NZM Čáslav is devoted to agricultural technology. Vodranty Forest Park adds a landscape dimension. Which themes you focus on depends on whether you are more interested in the city’s layout, history, collections or landscape.

City Layout and Architectural History

Náměstí J. Žižky square preserves a Gothic inner city layout with a large central square and a rectangular street grid. The square and street grid represent two distinct aspects of this historic form: the focus is not only on individual buildings, but also on the structure of the urban fabric. Those interested in city history will find this offers a perspective of its own, alongside looking at individual churches and towers.

At the Church of St. Peter and Paul, a succession of different construction phases can be seen. A predecessor church built in the mid-12th century was dedicated to St. Michael. An early Gothic presbytery was added in the 13th century; the Gothic three-aisled nave and the Chapel of the Virgin Mary of Sorrows were built in the 14th century. Thus, different medieval styles and periods of construction are found side by side in one building.

A historic event is also associated with the church: the Čáslav Diet was held there in 1421. The building history and the Diet offer two different perspectives on the same place—the development of the building over several centuries and its role in a specific event.

The surviving Otakarova bašta adds a connection to the former gate guard to this architectural history. The cylindrical tower is 22 metres high and was part of the former Brodská or Jeníkovská gate guard. It was remodelled in the Neo-Gothic style in 1883 and has survived in this form to this day. Its original function and later remodelling can be distinguished chronologically.

After the devastating city fire of 1522, a new hospital was built in the suburbs, together with a church and cemetery. The Church of St. Elizabeth is protected as a cultural monument: it has been protected since 3 May 1958, and its register number is ÚSKP 22699/2-922.

Museums: Local History and Technology

The Městské muzeum Čáslav is one of the oldest rural museums in the Czech Republic. It is housed in a building constructed in 1884 in the Neo-Renaissance style. The architecture of the building can therefore be appreciated as an aspect of the museum’s history in its own right. The Žižkova síň offers a different historical focus: its exhibition commemorates Jan Žižka of Trocnov and explores the history of the Hussite movement.

The NZM Čáslav focuses on the history of mass-produced series of tractors, combine harvesters and ploughs. The museum displays agricultural machinery in a modern exhibition; some of its depots are also accessible. These include rare prototypes that never went into series production. The history of mass-produced series and designs that never entered production are thus presented side by side—a specific contrast within the theme of a technical museum.

A cycle path also runs through the NZM grounds; there is also a traffic training area, a pump track and a workout zone. These facilities differ from the focus of the exhibition and offer another way to experience the museum grounds. As visitor facilities can change over time, check the current status of these amenities before your visit.

Landscape and Accommodation Search

Čáslavský hrádek lies near Podměstský rybník and is now part of Vodranty Forest Park. This adds a distinct landscape dimension alongside the city and technology history. The themes offer a clear distinction when deciding what to explore: the churches, tower and city layout represent architectural and local history, the NZM focuses on agricultural technology, and the forest park offers a landscape focus.

When searching for hotels in Čáslav, you could start by asking yourself which of these themes you would like to shape your stay.
