The history of Hlízov spans medieval records and evidence from the 20th century. Particularly notable are the village’s early history, a prehistoric grave find, the history of the chateau and a war memorial. Practical travel planning also involves specific visiting conditions and the described cycling connection to Starý Kolín.

History and Archaeological Traces

Hlízov was first mentioned in 1142 as a possession of Sedlec Monastery, which owned the village until 1421. The village’s first fortress was probably built as early as the end of the 15th century. Its early history thus encompasses both a medieval mention and evidence of later fortress construction.

The Chapel of the Fourteen Holy Helpers was added to Hlízov Chateau in 1746. The chateau and the entire farmyard are registered as immovable cultural monuments in the Central Register of Monuments of the Czech Republic, under registration number 45795/2–1132. This registration covers both of the components mentioned.

The prehistoric grave of Hlízov represents another period. It contained 20 vessels, including numerous Bell Beakers; the finds are kept at the Kolín Museum. The memorial to those who fell in the First World War was unveiled on 29 June 1924. It is an obelisk made of Hořice sandstone.

Monuments and Visiting Conditions

The stone statue column in Hlízov dates from the first half of the 19th century and was restored in 1995. It is registered as an immovable cultural monument and is freely accessible. As access conditions may change, check access before your visit.

The ceremonial chapel of Hlízov stands in the middle of the cemetery at the southern edge of the village, on the road to Malín. Visits are possible by arrangement. Southeast of the village, protected lime trees grow by the cemetery at Lípy u Panny Marie. They form a significant aesthetic landmark in the landscape.

Plan for Beer and Cycling

Pivovar Holanďan’s regular range includes a 10° draft beer, an 11° semi-dark lager, an 11° Kazbek ALE and a 12° lager. The varieties differ in both their names and their degree ratings. Rotating special beers supplement the regular range, so the selection may change.

Pivovar Holanďan offers groups of five to 15 people a 30-minute brewery tour with a tasting of the current tank beers. The tour must be arranged at least two days in advance. As availability and booking conditions may vary, confirm your preferred time beforehand.

A description of cycling route CKH2 published on 22 February 2026 gives a possible connection from Hlízov to Starý Kolín via the blue-marked KČT trail along the Klejnárka. Trail conditions and markings may change, so check the current route before setting out.

When planning, the brewery tour and the cycling route differ mainly in their conditions: the tour has a stated duration, group size and advance booking period. The cycling route’s direction and markings are described, while current trail conditions should be checked. This lets you consider a fixed, pre-arranged activity separately from an activity that depends on route conditions.
