Košice U Nepoměřic offers several concrete starting points for a stay with an interest in local and architectural history: the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary (Kostel Narození Panny Marie) brings together evidence from several centuries, while the pond on the village green shows another side of the local landscape. Together, the building and landscape offer two concrete ways to explore the history of Košice. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Košice U Nepoměřic, these themes can help you decide what kind of stay you would like.

Church: Traces from Several Centuries

The originally Romanesque church shows that Košice was a parish village by the middle of the 13th century at the latest. The first written mention of the village dates from 1287. These two details refer to different things: its documented status as a parish village by that time, at the latest, and its first written record. This makes it possible to place the village’s early history in context through both its ecclesiastical role and the written record.

The surviving elements of the original early Gothic structure include a rectangular nave and a rectangular chancel with a cross vault. The pointed-arch Late Gothic portal bears a date that places the construction of the tower in 1563. The bell chamber also contains two historic bells dating from 1475 and 1492. These dates precede the tower’s construction date and refer to different elements: taken together, they form a building history based on several distinct pieces of evidence, rather than providing a single construction date for the entire church.

The last major renovation took place in the 1820s. At that time, a sacristy was added and the entire church building was re-roofed. As part of a restoration project, the access stairs were also modified with the aim of making the bell chamber accessible. An expert-led tour of the church took place in 2012 as part of the European Heritage Days (Dnů evropského dědictví). If you are planning to visit the interior, check current access arrangements beforehand.

The church stands in the centre of Košice, on the road to Malešov, on a gentle slope above a watercourse.

The Pond in the Local Landscape

A second perspective on local history leads to the village green. Of the many ponds that once existed in Košice, only the pond in the centre of the village, on the green, remains today. The church tells its story through its architectural elements and renovations; the pond offers a landscape comparison between the area’s former variety and its present-day appearance. In this way, sacred architecture and the village green stand side by side as distinct, clearly identifiable features of the village.

Ceramics and Local Events

Events also offer other ways to explore the village. Regular pottery-making meetups were held at KC Košice; on 9 January 2024, one meetup focused on fauna and flora. At the fifth charity market, “KOLÁČ PRO KOSTEL V KOŠICÍCH,” a competition for the best traditional koláč among bakers took place on 8 September 2018. The examples have different focuses: the ceramics meetup combined craft with a nature theme, while the competition brought traditional pastries together with a charitable cause.
