Vrdy offers distinctive church architecture, a protected natural monument and specific recreational activities. The Church of All Saints in Dolní Bučice and the Church of the Holy Trinity in Zbyslav introduce different historical themes; Koupaliště Vrdy adds a small pool with a slide and other activities. When planning your trip, you can choose between architecture, biblical art, nature and recreational activities.
Church Architecture and Art
The Church of All Saints in Dolní Bučice faces east and is a single-nave structure built of rubble and ashlar stone. “Single-nave” describes a main space without side aisles; the presbytery is the chancel area. The building’s orientation and single-nave layout therefore describe different aspects of its design. The present-day Gothic presbytery dates from the mid-13th century. The church also preserves tombstones of Jindřich Kobylka and members of his family, dating from 1560 to 1581. Thus, a Gothic architectural feature and later memorial forms come together in the same church. The tombstones date from several centuries after the building phase in question.
The Church of the Holy Trinity in Zbyslav was first mentioned as a parish church in 1352. The year refers to its first mention in this role, not to the date of construction. Inside, Kramolín’s figurative biblical scenes depicting Abraham and the angels, the Baptism of Christ and the sending out of the Apostles have been preserved. While the architectural form and tombstones shape the interpretation of the Church of All Saints, the pictorial scenes take centre stage in Zbyslav. The two churches thus offer different cultural highlights: architectural history and tombstones in one, specific biblical subjects in the other.
Nature and Recreation
Zbyslavská mozaika is a protected natural monument located in Zbyslav, within the municipality of Vrdy. It adds a distinct natural dimension to the church-related themes. If you want to weigh cultural and nature-related interests separately when planning your trip, you can take this distinction into account.
Koupaliště Vrdy has a small pool with a slide. There is also mini golf, beach volleyball and a small children’s playground. This gives you a specific recreational option alongside the churches and natural monument, and one that is not limited to the pool. For your plans, this offers a different focus for activities than the historical attractions.
Pond and Mill History
The Na Ostrově pond in Dolní Bučice is part of a fishing district. The local anglers’ association traditionally holds fishing competitions there in April for adults, young people, children and unregistered anglers. As the competition traditionally takes place in April, check the current dates before making specific travel plans. If you plan to fish there, you should also check the applicable rules and permits, as fishing regulations may change.
The protected ensemble of the former watermill No. 30 comprises a residential building, a mill building and the demarcated plots. Unlike a single building, the heritage site here extends beyond the mill building to include the associated buildings and land.
