Grunta combines a significant Neo-Romanesque Secessionist church with several clearly defined route options. The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Grunta offers individual visits with a printed guide; there is also a moderate circular route, a nature trail to the church and a designated cycling route. This combination appeals to travellers who want to combine cultural history and outdoor activity during their stay.

Church and local history

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Grunta is a significant Neo-Romanesque Secessionist cultural monument. Individual visits are offered with a printed guide; opening arrangements vary by season, so you should check them before your trip. This makes the church a specific cultural destination whose visiting arrangements can be adapted to the season.

The village’s history also adds to its cultural significance: Grunta was probably founded by German miners in the mid-13th century during the reign of King Přemysl Otakar II (1253–1278), when silver ore was discovered in the surrounding area. The church represents the designated cultural heritage, while the founding story describes the village’s origins as something recorded only as probable.

Walking to Grunta

The northern loop of the Stříbrná stezka is 14 kilometres long, moderately difficult and passes through the Na Vrších Nature Reserve on its way to Grunta. The start and finish are at the Na Pašince restaurant in Kaňk; the loop includes twelve stops. From the former Turkaňk mine, the route follows a road past an orchard to Grunta. This makes it possible to factor in the distance and difficulty along with the specific stops when planning. Route markings and conditions may change; check the current route conditions and local access details before setting out.

In Grunta, the nature trail leads to the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and then continues to the yellow and subsequently the green hiking trail markings. When planning, it offers a different focus from the Stříbrná stezka: it describes how to find the church and then connect with the trail markings, while the circular route can be assessed by its distance, difficulty, stops, start and finish points.

Cycling route and landscape

The Vinařská naučná cyklotrasa is 4.835 kilometres long and designated as cycling route No. 0091. It connects to the local Kutná Hora–Grunta road. In terms of distance, the cycling route is shorter than the 14-kilometre circular route. The walking route is also rated as moderately difficult and passes through the Na Vrších Nature Reserve; the cycling route is identified by its number and road connection. This allows two different options to be compared when planning a trip without presenting them as a single route.

Around Grunta, the Polabská rovina Kolínska gradually gives way to the kutnohorské vrchy hills. This change in landscape adds regional context to the church and routes: the transition takes place gradually in the area around the village.

A dated local event

The sixth edition of the Velikonoční stezka took place in Grunta on 28 March 2026. Children completed various tasks and received small sweets as a reward. This event adds a specific past date to the permanent cultural and walking destinations.
