Třebovle is predominantly agricultural. Its archaeological traces and historic buildings give the town a distinct cultural and historical profile: its history ranges from settlements dating back to distant eras to an early Gothic church and a Baroque sculpture group. The 20-kilometre Lipanská mohyla educational trail also connects Třebovle with other places. When choosing accommodation, it is helpful to clarify in advance whether you want to focus on the town’s history or also plan a longer route.

Archaeology and Architectural History

The archaeological area lies in the historic town centre around the village square, along the road to Kouřim. Settlement traces date from the Linear Pottery culture through the Bell Beaker culture, the Lusatian culture and the Knovíz culture, up to the transition from the Late Middle Ages to the Early Modern period. These cultures represent different earlier periods; the settlement traces from the transition from the Late Middle Ages to the Early Modern period belong to a considerably later historical period. Chronologically placing the town’s history this way helps distinguish the archaeological traces from later architectural evidence, rather than grouping everything into a single era.

The Church of St Bartholomew is a notable early Gothic building, constructed towards the end of the second third of the 13th century. The complex is listed as an immovable cultural monument of the Czech Republic and comprises the church, the cemetery wall with its gate, and the bell tower. The Chapel of St John of Nepomuk provides a different art-historical accent: it contains a Baroque sculpture group made of red Nučice sandstone, dated to 1727. The early Gothic church and Baroque sculpture represent different periods and artistic expressions, offering a concrete comparison within the town’s history.

Historic Farmsteads and Pilgrimage

The origin of the name Sázavský dvůr is also part of the town’s history. In 1772, Leandr Kramář, abbot of the nearby Sázavský klášter, bought two previously separate farmsteads and united them into a single property, which has since been called Sázavský dvůr. The building of the Lower Farmstead (Dolní dvůr) at Sázavský dvůr is currently not open to the public; check the latest information before visiting.

A pilgrimage Mass is held once a year at the Church of St Bartholomew on the feast of St Bartholomew. If this religious occasion is important to your trip, check the exact date locally in advance.

Route and Getting There

The Lipanská mohyla educational trail connects Třebovle with Klášterní Skalice and passes through Lipany and Vitice; the described route covers 20 kilometres. This makes the route a separate planning consideration alongside the sights in the town centre. Decide whether the route through several places suits your stay, and check current trail conditions in advance. Bus connections link Třebovle with nearby towns as well as Kolín, Český Brod and Kouřim. Check the timetable for your travel dates before including specific departures in your plans.
