Plaňany combines a long history of settlement with buildings from different centuries. Its defining features include the preserved Romanesque Church of the Annunciation, the Church of St John the Baptist, and the history of the former synagogue. Mírkovská Fortress and the sports ground also add to the character of the town. Its historical layers range from 10th-century masonry to changes made in the 18th and 20th centuries.
Romanesque and Neo-Gothic Churches
The Church of the Annunciation is a preserved Romanesque church dating from the 12th century. In 1937, masonry dating from the 10th century was discovered beneath its floor; it may have belonged to an original rotunda. The find adds an earlier, possible building phase to the history of the church site.
The Church of St John the Baptist makes a different architectural statement. It is Neo-Gothic and dates from the late Historicist period. Completed in 1913, it became Plaňany’s new landmark. Its slender, prominently elevated prismatic tower is visible in the town and serves as a landmark in the surrounding landscape. Thus, two distinct church buildings stand side by side: the 12th-century Romanesque church and the Neo-Gothic landmark of the early 20th century.
Synagogue and Mírkovská Fortress
The synagogue in Plaňany was built between 1858 and 1861. From 1926, it served as a prayer house for the Czechoslovak Hussite Church. Husův sbor is located in the former synagogue. Its building history thus links its original use as a synagogue with its later religious use by another church.
Mírkovská Fortress also reflects several historical layers. In the 1740s, it was converted into a granary and extended; it has largely retained this form to the present day. The southern part contains original Renaissance masonry from the fortress’s residential palace. It extends to the height of the first-floor window sills. The surviving Renaissance fabric and the later conversion thus tell different chapters of the same building’s history.
Settlement History and Active Recreation
The settlement area at the confluence of the Kouřimka and Bečvárka rivers has been continuously inhabited since the Neolithic period. This long timespan complements the history of individual buildings with a broader view of how the settlement developed. Together, the town’s attractions span early settlement, religious architecture, and later changes to the fortress.
The sports ground is open to the general public of all ages for active recreation. The ball sports listed include tennis, volleyball, football, nohejbal, and basketball. The tourist game “Pečeckem kolem dokola”, associated with Plaňany, offers another connection to local tourism. The sports ground’s operating conditions may change, so check the current conditions of use before visiting.
For planning a trip, this offers a clear choice: the churches, former synagogue, and fortress represent different periods of the town’s history, while the sports ground provides an opportunity for active recreation. You can get to know Plaňany according to your interests, focusing on architecture and history or taking part in a sporting activity.
