Volcanic lakes, extensive forests and wetlands, and diverse cultures shape Heilongjiang in China. The region offers a variety of ways to explore it, from raft trips and birdwatching to historic architecture and storytelling. The seasons also make a clear impression: Heilongjiang’s extremely cold climate and its natural and cultural ice and snow landscapes provide an outstanding foundation for winter tourism.

Volcanic Landscapes and Experiences on the Water

At the UNESCO Global Geopark Jingpohu, visitors can take a raft trip on Jingpo Lake. The lake was formed by volcanic eruptions more than 10,000 years ago and is China’s largest alpine lava lake. It lies in Ning’an in southeastern Heilongjiang. For those interested in how volcanic landscapes form, this offers a tangible connection between geological history and a visitor experience today.

At Crater Forest Park, visitors can walk through a primeval forest belt formed by a volcanic collapse. This offers two different ways to experience the volcanic landscape: a trip on the lake and a walk through the forest belt. At Jingpo Lake, culinary experiences also include a feast of various fish dishes and the specialty “One Fish, Sixteen Preparations.” Seasonal conditions may affect raft trips and hiking trails; check the current conditions before your visit.

Forests, Wetlands and Volcanic Landforms

Heilongjiang is home to China’s largest contiguous forest area, including the Greater and Lesser Khingan ranges, and China’s largest contiguous wetland landscape. The Heilongjiang, Ussuri and Songhua rivers, as well as Xingkai, Jingpo, Lianhua and Wudalianchi lakes, are among the region’s river and lake tourism resources.

Tangwanghe Forest Sea Stone Forest Scenic Area covers 19,000 hectares and has 99.8 percent forest cover. It is home to more than 360 wildlife and plant species, as well as more than 800 insect and bird species. Birdwatchers can also visit Zhalong in Qiqihar: this ecotourism area is China’s first specialized birdwatching area and is known for its pristine wetland landscape and abundant waterfowl.

Wudalianchi Scenic Area covers 1,060 square kilometers and includes 14 volcanoes from different eruption periods and five volcanic barrier lakes arranged like a string of pearls. It is a varied destination for sightseeing, health and wellness stays, mineral spring development and scientific exploration. In Heilongjiang, both wetland observation and volcanic landforms are highlights for visitors with a range of interests in nature.

Architecture, History and Storytelling

The Russian-influenced historic town of Hengdaohezi includes 256 Russian buildings, 104 of which are protected heritage buildings, and is located in the old town center of Hengdao in Heilongjiang. The number of buildings may change as preservation work continues; the town’s historic character remains. The site of Shangjing Longquanfu, the Tang-era capital of the Bohai Kingdom, is also in Heilongjiang.

Cultural expression also includes oral and performance traditions. Zandanren is a traditional Oroqen singing form associated with the life of hunters and practiced, among other places, in Huma and Tahe counties and the Daxing’anling area. Imakan, a storytelling performance art of the Hezhen people, is practiced in the Hezhen settlements of Heilongjiang. The art form has existed since at least the late 19th or early 20th century and is listed by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage in urgent need of safeguarding.

Travel Interests and Planning

For self-drive travelers, the G331 self-drive corridor offers a distinct approach to planning: Heilongjiang’s tourism plan envisions it as linking border and cross-border tourism with riverbank, wetland and lake tourism. The plan also calls for a province-wide hiking and trekking trail network, road cycling route networks, and tourist mountain bike routes with rules of conduct. These proposals provide a framework for different interests in outdoor activities and landscapes, without implying that every individual route has already been completed.

When looking for a hotel, you can first decide what you want your stay to focus on: volcanic landscapes, birdwatching, forests and wetlands, or architecture and cultural history. This helps you tailor your choice to the themes that bring you to Heilongjiang.
