When choosing the Greater Khingan Mountains as your destination, consider the wider Daxing’anling region: it lies in the northwest of Heilongjiang Province, in the northeast of Inner Mongolia, and on the northeastern slope of the Greater Khingan Mountains. As China’s northern border region, Daxing’anling is also known as the “North Pole of China.” The wider region brings together wetland landscapes, Oroqen culture and seasonal leisure activities. For your planning, it is worth deciding first whether nature, culture, cuisine or winter activities will be your main focus.

Forests, Wetlands and Climate

The wider Daxing’anling region has a cold-temperate continental monsoon climate. The average summer temperature is 20 °C. This figure describes the regional long-term average, not the weather on a particular travel day; for specific dates, a current weather forecast is a useful addition. Nanwenghe Wetland, also known as the Nenjiang Source Scenic Area, is a nature reserve established to protect a cold-temperate forest-wetland ecosystem. It preserves an intact original forest and wetland ecosystem as well as the source of the Nenjiang River. Its island-like forest wetlands are considered unique nationwide.

Baiquangu Ecological Tourism Scenic Area in Songling District is listed as a 4A-rated area in the official 2025 list. A 2024 description mentions wooden boardwalks, an observation tower on Luquanshan and three forest treehouses. These facilities should be understood as the state described at that time; check current access arrangements before visiting.

Seasonal Activities in the Wider Region

The Jiagedaqi Forestry Bureau focuses its tourism planning on summer ecological recreation and winter sports. A 2024 tourism plan for the southern part of the wider Daxing’anling region names Ying Shan Hong Ski Resort, Ice and Snow Park and the Duobuku’er River cruise as key visitor facilities. The list highlights the seasonal contrast in the plan: snow activities sit alongside offerings for the warmer months. Check in advance whether each activity is currently available.

Oroqen Culture and Regional Cuisine

Oroqen folk cultural traditions in the wider Daxing’anling region include paper-cutting, traditional clothing, shamanic clothing, Zandaren and shamanic dances. Visitors can experience Oroqen culture at the Eighteen Stations Oroqen Ethnic Customs Park scenic area. Zandaren is a traditional Oroqen singing style associated with life as hunters. In Heilongjiang, it is widespread in areas including Huma and Tahe counties and the Daxing’anling region.

The regional food offerings also have a distinctive character: they include cold-water fish from Heilongjiang, blueberries, cranberries, medicinal plants and more than 30 varieties of edible mushrooms. A 2024 description of Yinluju Wild-Vegetable Experience Hall mentions more than 80 developed dishes, primarily featuring distinctive medicinal cuisine. It also lists educational activities, viewing, picking and hands-on experiences for visitors. Before visiting, check which of the listed offerings are currently available.

Choose Accommodation Based on Your Interests

When searching for a holiday rental, you can start by deciding what interests you most: wetlands and forests, Oroqen culture, regional cuisine or seasonal activities. This way, you can plan around the experience you want rather than choosing accommodation whose location may not suit your plans.
