Harbin brings together landscape and wetland themes, the city’s architectural history, and a range of museum and visitor experiences. When planning your trip, it is helpful to distinguish between the different highlights: Sun Island and Harbin Ice and Snow World represent different aspects of the landscape and ice and snow art, while Central Street and Chinese Baroque offer distinct perspectives on architectural history. Museums and Harbin Polar Park complement these themes with city history, ethnology, and polar attractions.

Sun Island and Harbin Ice and Snow World

The Sun Island Scenic Area in Harbin is designated as a national scenic area and a national wetland park. The cultural and scenic area traditionally known as Sun Island covers 7.05 square kilometers and is divided into eastern, central, and western sections. Harbin Ice and Snow World is located in Songbei District, west of Sun Island. The large-scale ice and snow art project was launched by the Harbin municipal government in 1999 to support the millennium celebration as part of the “China Century Tour” event. Harbin is thus home to both a designated scenic area and the story of an urban ice and snow art project.

Metro links to several city attractions

Metro Line 2 connects, among other places, Harbin Ice and Snow World, Sun Island, Harbin Polar Park, Central Street, and Sofia Square. You can take Line 2 to Harbin Ice and Snow World from Harbin Railway Station and Central Street. The line therefore provides both access to several named attractions and specific starting points for the journey to the Ice and Snow World. Schedules and route connections may change, so check the current service before setting out.

Historic streets and architectural styles

Central Street was developed as a commercial street in 1907, after Harbin opened as a trading city. Of its 75 European or pseudo-European buildings, 36 are classified as protected buildings. The Heilongjiang provincial government designated the street as one of the province’s first historic and cultural districts. The classification of individual buildings may change as a result of decisions by the authorities.

The Chinese Baroque Historic and Cultural District is an important cultural heritage site and tourist attraction. It is the largest and most completely preserved surviving ensemble of its kind in China. It covers 47.23 hectares and includes 40 immovable cultural heritage sites, 61 historic buildings, and 105 courtyard compounds. Its architecture combines traditional Chinese elements with Western Baroque features and reflects Harbin’s historical transformation and the intertwining of Chinese and Western cultures. The two districts differ in their architectural emphasis: European or pseudo-European buildings shape the character of Central Street, while Chinese Baroque highlights the blend of Chinese and Western design.

Museums and themed attractions

Through its extensive collections and diverse exhibitions, the Harbin City Museum presents the city’s history as well as Harbin’s music and folk culture. Individual exhibitions may change. The Heilongjiang Ethnic Museum, located in Harbin Confucius Temple, is classified as a National First-Class Museum and recognized by the state as a Category 3A museum; it is also China’s first specialized provincial-level ethnological museum. Their profiles differ significantly: the city museum brings together topics related to Harbin’s history and culture, while the ethnological museum focuses on specialized ethnological subjects.

Harbin Polar Park focuses its visitor offerings on polar-themed shows, animal encounters, and science education activities. Individual shows and animals may change. The park thus complements the city’s historical and architectural themes with a distinct polar attraction.
