Typical marsh vegetation grows in Dragoman Marsh, with open water remaining year-round in some places. The Dragoman Marsh protected area extends across the lands of the town of Dragoman and the village of Golyamo Malovo. It was designated to preserve important habitats, protected species, natural ecosystems and biodiversity.

Wetland and Chepan

The boundaries of the protected areas also encompass different natural environments: the wetland lies entirely within the “Dragoman” Natura 2000 site (BG0000322) and partly within the “Rayanovtsi” Special Protection Area (BG0002001). The open water that remains year-round in some places and the typical marsh vegetation are among the area’s defining features.

Petrovski Krast is the highest peak in the Chepan Mountains and can be reached in less than two hours. Trail conditions may vary; check the current state of the route before setting out on a hike. A rock sanctuary dedicated to the cult of Sabazios-Dionysus stood on Chepan’s summit during the Iron Age and remained in use into antiquity.

A 2009 report about a student seminar describes a visit to the observation centre in Dragoman Marsh, a walk along the boardwalk and a climb to a cave in Chepan. If you plan to visit these sites, check access arrangements locally in advance.

Churches and Monasteries in the Municipality

The Dragoman municipality area is known as the “Little Holy Mountain” or “Little Athos” because of its concentration of Orthodox churches, often located in hard-to-reach places. Five places of worship in the municipality are named Svetа Petka. In Vasilovtsi, the Church of Sveti Spas is one of the municipality’s five cultural monuments of artistic and historical value.

The Church of “Saints Peter and Paul” stands in Berende. This medieval place of worship has fully preserved interior frescoes. Its exact date is uncertain, with estimates ranging from the early 13th to the mid-14th century. Also in Berende, a centuries-old oak has grown around a votive cross dedicated to Saint Dimitar.

The Nedelishte Monastery of “Sveti Atanassi Veliki” lies between the villages of Dreatin and Nedelishte. This cultural and historical monument has a history spanning more than ten centuries. The municipality’s first monastic school was founded in the monks’ wing. The Cheparlyan Monastery lies on the right bank of the Nishava, about two kilometres east of Cheparlyantsi, on the site of an early Christian sanctuary. Byzantine gravestones dating from the 6th to 7th centuries were found in its foundations.

Folklore and Local Insights

The international folklore festival “Nishavski Horovod” takes place every year on 24 and 25 May, simultaneously in Bulgaria and Serbia. Dragoman is the Bulgarian festival centre, and Dimitrovgrad the Serbian one. If you are planning your trip around the festival, check the programme details for the relevant dates in advance.

A visitor centre in the village of Nesla is intended to serve as a source of tourist information. Exhibitions and demonstrations are planned to cover local crafts, customs, rituals, culinary traditions and folklore.
