Dragoman is associated with the “Bike and Run for Chepan” mountain running and cycling event: the town serves as a starting point for routes through the Chepan Mountains. Nearby is the Dragoman Swamp Complex, a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. Visitors wishing to combine nature, activity and culture will find a range of themes and places across the wider Dragoman destination—from wetlands to churches and historic sites.

Wetlands and protected areas

Dragoman Swamp is a wetland protected under several designations. It lies entirely within the Natura 2000 site “Dragoman” (BG0000322) and partly within the “Rayanovtsi” Special Protection Area (BG0002001). The “Dragoman Swamp” protected area extends across the lands of the town of Dragoman and the village of Golyamo Malovo. It was designated to protect important habitats, protected species, natural ecosystems and biodiversity.

Typical swamp vegetation characterizes the wetland, with open water remaining year-round in some places. These features offer a concrete impression of the landscape, without reducing the swamp to a single viewpoint or visitor site. When planning a trip, this natural setting sits alongside the cultural attractions across the wider Dragoman destination.

Chepan, hiking times and festival dates

The Chepan Mountains bring together two different aspects of a trip: they are the setting for routes used in the “Bike and Run for Chepan” event, while their peak Petrovsky Krast is also notable for its history. Petrovsky Krast is the highest point in the mountains and can be reached on foot in under two hours. Trail conditions may vary, so check them before setting out. In the Iron Age, a rock sanctuary dedicated to the cult of Sabazios-Dionysus stood on the summit and remained in use into antiquity.

Folklore is also part of the event calendar. Dragoman is one of the centers of the international “Nishava Horovod” festival, held jointly in Bulgaria and Serbia. Across the wider Dragoman destination, the festival is celebrated every year on May 24 and 25; Dragoman is its Bulgarian center, and Dimitrovgrad its Serbian one. Since the program and dates may change from year to year, it is worth checking the details for your planned travel period.

Cultural sites across the wider Dragoman destination

In Berende stands the medieval Church of “Saints Peter and Paul,” with its interior frescoes fully preserved. Its exact date is uncertain: estimates range from the early 13th to the mid-14th century. Also in Berende is a centuries-old oak, intertwined with a votive cross dedicated to Saint Dimitar. The church and the oak offer two distinct ways to explore the history of the place: sacred art on the one hand, and a religious monument connected with a tree on the other.

Between the villages of Dreatin and Nedelishte lies the Nedelishte Monastery of “Saint Athanasius the Great,” a cultural and historical monument with a history spanning more than ten centuries. The municipality of Dragoman’s first monastery school was founded in its monks’ wing. The municipality’s religious sites also have distinct associations: five churches bear the name Saint Petka; the Church of the Holy Savior in the village of Vasilovtsi is one of the municipality’s five cultural monuments of artistic and historical value.

The area of Dragoman Municipality is also known as the “Little Holy Mountain” or “Little Athos” because of its concentration of Orthodox churches, often located in hard-to-reach places. The nickname captures a regional characteristic; it does not describe a single building.

Discover local traditions

A visitor center is planned in the village of Nesla as a point of contact for tourist information. Its concept includes space for exhibitions and demonstrations of local crafts, customs, rituals, culinary traditions and folklore. Together with the cross-border festival and historic sites, the wider Dragoman destination offers several cultural perspectives. To plan your trip, you can start by choosing a focus: the wetland and Chepan, festival dates, or the cultural sites in the individual villages.
