Most of the Pamporovo resort complex lies within the territory of the Municipality of Chepelare. This gives the destination a distinctive connection to winter sports—but nature, history and trails offer further perspectives on the region. Getting your bearings is also straightforward: the Municipality of Chepelare lies on National Road II-86 between Plovdiv and Smolyan.

Pamporovo and Mechi Chal: Winter Sports from Two Perspectives

Pamporovo has 50 kilometers of alpine ski runs served by eight lifts. The lift facilities and ski slopes at Mechi Chal are the main winter sports and skiing facilities in the town of Chepelare. For trip planning, it is worth treating the figures for slopes and lifts as approximate and checking the relevant operating information before your visit.

The focus is not exclusively on winter: Pamporovo also has a mountain bike park with facilities and trails, established in 2012. Skiing and mountain biking are therefore different experiences available within the same resort complex; which one suits your trip depends mainly on your interests and the time of year.

Rock Formations, Waterfall and Mountain Views

The Wonderful Bridges are natural rock bridges formed over thousands of years. Railings and stone steps carved into the rock make it easier for visitors to access the area. As conditions at such sites can change, it is a good idea to check before visiting.

Another natural highlight is Duplevo Waterfall, a protected natural landmark in the area of Orehovo. The Mechi Chal panoramic platform lies at an altitude of 1,852 meters and offers views of the surrounding area. Those interested in specific geological features can also find sinter pools in Sbirakova Cave, located in the village of Progled.

A single tree is also among the area's named natural features: the centuries-old spruce “Chepelarski Yunatsi” can be reached by hiking trail or lift. If you plan to use the lift, check its operation separately for your intended visit.

Churches, Museums and Local History

In Chepelare, the more than 100-year-old clock tower is considered one of the town's landmarks. The Church of “Sv. Atanasij Veliki” dates from 1834 and is a cultural monument of national importance. The two buildings show different aspects of the cultural heritage: the tower is established as a symbol of the town, while the church is associated with a specific construction date and a national monument classification.

The exhibitions and collections offer further highlights. The Museum of Rhodope Karst covers five topics related to speleology and the rich karst landscapes of the Rhodopes and Bulgaria. Nearly 1,000 exhibits are on display at the Ski and Sports Museum. In Orehovo, the “Rodopsko Badeshte” community center houses a historical and ethnographic collection of tools and household items from local everyday life up to the mid-20th century. Opening arrangements are not specified for these collections; check visiting options before your visit.

Hvoyna also contributes to the area's historical diversity: the Church of “Sv. Ilija” has been preserved there since 1857. The village is also the starting point of a 200-kilometer cross-border eco-route along the Chernatitsa ridge. The church and the long-distance route represent two very different ways to engage with the place—through its preserved heritage or by following a long trail through the landscape.

Hiking Trails and Practical Information

The “Stara Vodenitsa” eco-trail starts in the center of Chepelare, by the last building of the ski factory, and leads to the old mill. As described on August 17, 2022, the route is three kilometers long and takes one hour to walk. Check the conditions and route information locally before setting out.

For information about other sights, the Chepelare Tourist Information Center provides visitors with information on regional attractions and places of tourist interest. This makes it possible to explore the area's different themes—winter sports, geological features, churches and collections—without combining them into a single excursion itinerary.
