Nedelino’s two-part singing tradition is considered unique to the area and uses fourths and seconds. Around 350 Nedelino two-part songs have been collected and transcribed; since 2017, the tradition has been taught as a subject at the Academy of Music, Dance and Fine Arts in Plovdiv. A national festival of two-part singing and folk songs, with international participation, is usually held over the first Friday, Saturday and Sunday in September. Check the dates for each edition.
Rhodope Setting and River
Nedelino Municipality lies in the central southern part of the Central Rhodopes and belongs to Smolyan Province in southern Bulgaria. Elevations within the municipality range from 450 to 1,200 metres; the town of Nedelino itself lies on the Nedelinska River. Nedelino is near the tourist centres of Smolyan, Pamporovo, Kardzhali, Perperikon and Zlatograd, as well as the border with Greece.
Culture in Everyday Life and Throughout the Year
The Nedelino Museum displays authentic objects, clothing and household items from the town’s everyday life and history. The historic Turčin Bridge is also a notable place in local history: Gergyovden celebrations are held there.
Two distinct customs take place throughout the year: Nasha Marta is observed annually on 14 March and marks the transition between winter and spring. It centres on lighting a large fire and then jumping over it, which is believed to bring good health. Adralec, Nedelino’s name for Gergyovden, falls on 6 May. The three-day custom includes shared meals, ritual singing of wreath songs and wading in the river. Specific public events may vary.
Trails, Views and Nature
At Belite Kamani, locally known as Beloto Kamene, a 12-kilometre eco-trail and a cycling route form part of a site with a Thracian solar sanctuary and sweeping views of the Eastern Rhodopes. The Bezdnik Waterfall offers a different landscape: it lies in the rocky bed of the Tiklenska River below the village of Burevo, along the old road to Garnati. Access conditions at the waterfall may vary; check for current information before visiting.
The Roman Road–Omarevi Kolibi trail follows part of the old route towards Greece and the Aegean Sea. Both the start and finish are at the Nedelino Tourist Information Centre. Trail maintenance and markings may change; check for current information before setting out.
The eco-trail to the protected cave site of Godumova Dupka runs for about 3.6 kilometres from the Tourist Information Centre and includes four equipped rest stops. The Nedelino–Sveta Nedelya trail is shorter, at 1,889 metres, ends at the summit and has five rest stops. Maintenance and access on the trail to Godumova Dupka, as well as the condition of the Nedelino–Sveta Nedelya trail, may change; check the relevant information before setting out. South of the town are also the ruins of an old fortress and the Sveta Nedelya Monastery. The 865-metre-high Sveta Nedelya summit offers sweeping views of nearby mountain formations, Samothrace and the Aegean Sea.
Traditional Dishes
