Zabardo offers two distinct focuses for a stay: hiking toward the Chernatitsa Ridge and the surrounding meadows and fields, and discovering Rhodope traditions, crafts, and history. Local cuisine and natural and historical destinations nearby round out the experience. When planning a trip, you can focus on outdoor activities, culture, or a mix of both.

Accommodation and Getting There

Zabardo has categorized tourist establishments offering accommodation and meals. These local options provide a starting point when choosing a base for your stay; check the specific options for your travel dates. If driving, take extra care on the narrow, winding road to Zabardo. Check local road conditions before setting off.

Hiking and Nature

From Zabardo, hiking routes head toward the Chernatitsa Ridge and the surrounding meadows and fields. This makes outdoor activities a key focus, while the village’s cultural attractions offer a different emphasis for planning your trip.

The Wonderful Bridges are also nearby: natural rock bridges in an old spruce forest at 1,450 meters above sea level. They were formed over thousands of years. The natural site is freely accessible; as access conditions can change from time to time, check before your visit. An information center at the bridges provides information about the surrounding area and the culture and history of Chepelare Municipality, as well as tourist services. If you plan to use these services, check in advance what is currently available.

Culture and Local Cuisine

An ethnographic exhibition at the local community center displays woven carpets, rugs, and carved panels; these exhibits are also for sale. Zabardo preserves Rhodope folk music and traditional costume traditions. Local culinary traditions include kachamak, patatnik, and klin. The exhibition and these traditions can be planned as a distinct focus alongside exploring the landscape’s trails.

Zabardo hosts annual fairs and festivals; dates and programs may vary. If you want a festival to determine when you travel, check the specific dates.

At the junction for Zabardo and the Wonderful Bridges is the sculpture composition “Hospitality of the Rhodope Mountains.” Fresh trout and fish dishes from a nearby fish pond are offered in front of the sculpture. As what is available on site can change, check in advance if you are planning specifically to try them.

Historical Traces

History enthusiasts can visit the nearby Thracian fortress of Zagrad, on the summit of Chuka. It stands beside the road from Zabardo to the Plovdiv–Smolyan road. Thracian pottery for everyday use dating from the Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age has been found at the fortress and on the surrounding slopes. A constructed path runs along the inside of the fortress wall; signposts are installed at the site.

Traces of ancient routes are also part of the surrounding area: a section of an ancient Roman road near Zabardo is still visible. Parts of the ancient route known as the Via Egnatia remain on the Chernatitsa Ridge above the village. These remains add another perspective on the area’s history alongside the fortress, and can be included in trip planning along with hiking and Rhodope culture.
