Hvoyna offers two different scales of outings: local hiking trails to mountain huts and neighboring villages, and the starting point of a 200-kilometer cross-border eco-route. There is also the preserved Church of St. Elijah, dating from 1857, and family-run accommodation and dining options offering food and authentic Rhodope music. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between hiking, a longer route, and a focus on culture and food.

Hiking trails and the eco-route from Hvoyna

Local hiking trails lead from Hvoyna to mountain huts and neighboring villages. You can plan your hike around a mountain hut or neighboring village as your destination. A 200-kilometer cross-border eco-route also starts in Hvoyna. It runs along the Chernatitsa ridge, passes through Orehovo and several Rhodope landscapes and settlements, and continues toward Elidje Pass above Rudozem.

The two types of routes cover different scales: on the local trails, you choose a single destination; the eco-route follows a longer cross-border connection through several landscapes and settlements. If you are mainly planning a hike to a hut or village, the local trails are the relevant option. If you are interested in the longer route, the eco-route takes center stage. Trail conditions and markings may change. Check them locally before setting off.

Church, history, and feast date

The preserved Church of St. Elijah in Hvoyna dates from 1857, placing it in the mid-19th century. A feast held on July 20 is also associated with the church. The year of construction and the feast date offer two different points of reference: one places the church in its historical context, while the other gives the date of the associated feast. If you are interested in religious architecture, you can include this cultural point of interest in your travel plans. Access to the interior may depend on services; check in advance about a suitable opportunity to visit.

Accommodation, food, and music

Hvoyna has family-run accommodation and dining options offering food and authentic Rhodope music. This adds a distinct culinary and musical element to the hiking and history on offer. When choosing where to stay, you can consider how important these food and music options are to you alongside the places you plan to visit. Visitor services may change; confirm their availability before you arrive.

Getting there and finding your way
