Discoveries in Sliven Province range from the rock landscapes of Sinite Kamani Nature Park to fortresses, historic houses and craft traditions. Sinite Kamani: Heights, Rock Formations and Trails
Sinite Kamani Nature Park covers 11,380.8 hectares and includes parts of the city of Sliven and the villages of Blatec, Glushnik, Ichera, Kaloyanovo, Sotirya and Topolchane. Its elevation ranges from 290 meters to Mount Bulgarka at 1,181 meters, regarded as the highest peak of the eastern Stara Planina. Notable rock formations include Halkata, Kuminite, Kuklite, Rakavichkata and Kaloyanovi Kuli; the park also features caves, springs, and forest, meadow and water landscapes.
Protected forest habitats include beech, oak and hornbeam. There is also vegetation on limestone and silicate rock. The flora is noteworthy too: 77 species are under national or international protection, including Urumov's tulip, David's autumn crocus, the military orchid, Haller's pasqueflower and the wood anemone. This diversity adds a closer perspective on the park's nature to its expansive landscapes.
There are several hiking routes. One runs from Karandila via Golyama Chatalka to the Belite Izvori springs. Two others start and end in Sliven: one goes via Karandila, Peschenik, Archangela, Haydushki Izvor, Bachvata and Enyova Bulka, while the other goes via Ravna Reka, Gunchov Izvor, Mochurite and Dolapite. Other trails connect natural and cultural attractions: one leads to Zmeevi Dupki Cave, a waterfall and the medieval Chapel of the Forty Martyrs; another links the Church of Sveta Petka, Mecha Dupka Waterfall and the Sotirska River. Check local trail conditions before setting out. The park also has alpine routes, a paragliding route on Mount Kulata and a ski slope in the Daula area; operating conditions may vary.
Fortresses, Museums and Crafts
The Municipality of Sliven lists 475 archaeological, historical and architectural cultural monuments, 20 of them with national monument status. Near Sliven, the late antique and medieval fortress of Tuida stands on Hisarlaka Hill. From there, you can enjoy views towards Sinite Kamani and over the city. A specialized industrial museum founded in Sliven in 1984 is considered the first of its kind in Bulgaria; its working exhibits trace the development of the textile industry.
Zheravna is an architectural and museum reserve with preserved Revival-era houses, cobbled lanes and fountains. 172 houses in the village are designated cultural monuments. A history exhibition is housed in the birthplace of educator Sava Filaretov, whose wooden decoration is carved and gilded. In Kotel, the Galatansko School houses an exhibition on traditional carpet weaving. It also displays original carpets from the 17th to 19th centuries—a tangible insight into a craft the exhibition traces across several centuries.
Tvarditsa: History, Trails and Regional Products
The ruins of the fortress that gave the town its name stand in Tvarditsa. The Church of Sveta Petka is designated a cultural monument; an exhibition displays archaeological finds from the surrounding area. There are also various routes outdoors: the Kom–Emine National Ecopath and an off-road rally route for vehicles with high ground clearance cross the Tvarditsa area. Eco-, hunting and ski tourism are considered development opportunities for the Sheshkingrad and Chumerna mountain bases, not a promise that these are already available.
The Municipality of Tvarditsa highlights local products such as Tvardishki pork, Turkish baklava, tarhana and dried fish. These are joined by Tunnel Misket and Cherna Keratsa wines, as well as peaches, strawberries and apples from local settlements. Regional products thus complement cultural and scenic discoveries with a distinctive culinary focus.
Practical Information
You can reach Tvarditsa via the Sub-Balkan Road towards Sliven, or via Nova Zagora and then north towards Tvarditsa, Elena and Veliko Tarnovo. The town is also served by the Sub-Balkan railway via Karlovo. Check timetables before you travel.
