Nova Zagora, also known internationally as Nova Zagora, offers a good base for combining the town museum with various destinations in the surrounding area. The Historical Museum is in town; the prehistoric settlement mound of Karanovo, the mineral baths of Korten and the Zhrebechevo Reservoir are separate destinations for excursions. A short trip is easier to plan if you first choose between local history, archaeology and landscape, then check the actual routes.
Historical Museum and local history
The Historical Museum of Nova Zagora was founded in 1921 by the Zagorie archaeological society and history teacher Nikola Stefanov Koychev. Its collection comprises more than 40,000 objects, including archaeological, numismatic, ethnographic and paleontological items, as well as historical documents. This range makes it a natural starting point for exploring the history of the area. However, the collection size does not mean that all the objects are on display at the same time. Check current opening hours, the themes of the current exhibition and possible guided tours before your visit.
Some of the finds from Karanovo can be seen in museums in Sofia and Nova Zagora. If you are interested in the excavations, you can thus connect the museum and the archaeological site in your mind without assuming that every artefact can be seen at the mound itself.
Karanovo: a long prehistoric period
The Karanovo settlement mound is about ten kilometres from Nova Zagora. Its cultural layers span the Neolithic to the Bronze Age; one local description gives a settlement period of about 3,000 years. It is described as one of the oldest prehistoric settlement mounds in Europe. This time span refers to successive layers, not to a single, unchanged settlement. Before visiting, check current access, guided tour options and transport from the town centre. A distance of ten kilometres does not guarantee a particular travel time.
Other excursions in the surrounding area
The Korten mineral baths lie in the Tundzha Plain, around 15 kilometres north of Nova Zagora. The water is said to have a temperature of 57 degrees Celsius. This figure describes a local resource and is not a recommendation to use the hot water without professional guidance; check with the relevant operator for specific bathing, spa or health services. The Zhrebechevo Reservoir offers places for recreation, fishing and water sports in its surroundings. Sport fishing and canoe-kayak competitions have also been held there. Past competitions do not confirm an event during your visit; check current access to the water, permits and conditions.
Those who prefer hiking can visit the area around the peaks of Zubcheto and Kurt Kaya within the municipality. Kurt Kaya reaches 542 metres; a marked eco-trail leads from a ridge and is described as suitable for less experienced hikers as well. This does not guarantee suitability in bad weather or for every level of fitness. Check the trail conditions and starting point before combining it with a town visit.
Events and a base for overnight stays
The Samardala Festival featured a culinary exhibition, competitions and a market selling products seasoned with samardala. A national amateur theatre festival was held in Nova Zagora in 2025. Both descriptions highlight cultural themes, but they are not confirmed dates for a future stay. The municipality is connected by road and rail; check specific routes and times for current information. Choose your accommodation base according to the focus of your trip and an actual offer at a suitable address. The page on Sliven Province provides regional information, not proof that rooms are available in Nova Zagora.
