Kotel invites you to explore its architecture and everyday culture together. The town is an architectural and historical reserve with more than 110 surviving houses from the Bulgarian National Revival period. The Kyorpeeva House in Galata turns the focus to a single building: the Revival-era house dates from 1872 and features an authentic interior of a 19th-century Kotel household. Here, the history of the houses meets that of a particular domestic way of life.
Carpet Art and Cultural History
An exhibition at the Galatansko School traces the development of Kotel carpet weaving, from carpets and traditional rugs to modern woven tapestries. It also includes original carpets from the 17th to 19th centuries. The “Kotel Awakening” exhibition focuses on something different. It presents the literary and educational work of figures from Kotel’s Revival period, including educators and revolutionaries. While the carpet exhibition follows a craft, this one turns its attention to education and literature.
The city’s religious and musical culture are also part of the picture. The churches of Sveta Troitsa and Saints Peter and Paul preserve carved woodwork. Kotel is also home to the first secondary school for folk singing and instrumental music. Together, these places and institutions offer different ways to explore the city: through architecture and crafts, as well as music, education and religious art.
Mountain Basins, Forests and Biodiversity
Kotel lies in a small basin in the eastern Stara Planina at 527 metres above sea level. The Kotel area includes hilly foothills and mountain basins, with elevations ranging from approximately 300 to 1,128 metres. Razboyna is the highest peak in the area. The Orlitsata Nature Reserve covers 559.4 hectares in Kotel and the village of Medven. It protects ancient beech forests, habitats of rare birds of prey, and a karst landscape with caves, sinkholes and springs. Mountain springs and small rivers also shape the landscape.
The Natural History Museum presents the region’s biodiversity through more than 30,000 species. Endangered species on display include cinereous vultures, black storks, golden eagles, otters and brown bears. The exhibition highlights the region’s diversity, while Orlitsata brings together specific habitats and karst formations.
Trails and Waterfalls
From the Chukarite area, forest trails and tourist eco-trails lead towards Razboyna, Zheravna, Neykovo and Karandila in the Sliven Mountains. Sinia Vir is designated a natural landmark; the waterfall is seven metres high, and the natural landmark covers 1.1 hectares. A tourist route east of Kotel leads to the area after about 3.5 hours on foot. Skoka Waterfall lies on the Medven River near Medven. It can be reached through old, relatively untouched forests on the southern slopes of the Stara Planina.
